Chapter 4 - The Thanksgiving AftermathWhile we slept in the safety of the penthouse, the Peterson household was descending into a state of panic.

At 7:00 AM on Black Friday—traditionally the day Frank Peterson took great pride in reviewing holiday retail investments and lording over his family like a feudal lord—the front doorbell of the Chicago brownstone rang with relentless, official authority.
Frank, wearing a silk bathrobe and holding a cup of espresso, marched down the grand staircase, fully expecting a courier with holiday gift baskets. Instead, when he pulled open the heavy oak door, he was greeted by two uniformed Chicago police officers accompanied by a stern-faced court bailiff.
“Frank Peterson?” the lead officer asked, flashing a crisp legal document.
“Yes? What is the meaning of this?” Frank bristled, his face reddening.
“You’ve been served with an emergency civil injunction and restraining order filed on behalf of Chloe and Lily Peterson,” the bailiff announced loudly enough to echo through the foyer. “Furthermore, pursuant to a federal financial audit request filed by the state regulatory commission, all primary commercial assets, corporate operating accounts, and joint residential properties linked to Peterson Developments are placed under immediate administrative freeze pending a forensic accounting review.”
Frank’s espresso cup slipped from his fingers, shattering against the imported marble floor, the dark liquid splattering across his slippers.
“An audit?” Frank stammered, his face turning an alarming shade of purple. “That’s impossible! Who authorized an audit on my company without warning?”
Before the bailiff could answer, Mark came stumbling down the stairs in his wrinkled Thanksgiving dress shirt, looking like he hadn't slept a wink. “Dad? What’s going on? My corporate credit card was just declined at a gas station, and my online banking portal says all accounts have been restricted!”
Carol and Megan appeared at the top of the stairs, wrapped in designer silk robes, staring down at the chaos in absolute horror.
“What is happening?” Megan shrieked, running down the stairs. “Who are these people? Why are there police officers in our foyer?”
The lead officer looked at Mark with cold professional detachment. “Mr. Mark Peterson, you are also served with temporary emergency custody restrictions regarding your daughter, Lily Peterson, prohibiting unsupervised contact pending a family court hearing on Monday morning. Good morning to you all.”
The officers turned and walked down the steps, leaving the Peterson family standing in the wreckage of their shattered morning routine.
Frank turned on his son, his eyes blazing with fury. “What did you do, Mark? What did your wife do?”
“My wife?” Mark yelled back, his hands shaking with panic. “Your family is the one who couldn't keep their hands to themselves! Megan slapped a five-year-old child over a piece of turkey, and you all acted like it was normal behavior!”
Megan gasped, stepping back as if Mark had struck her. “How dare you blame me! That ungrateful little brat deserved it!”
“Shut up!” Frank roared, his voice shaking the rafters of the grand foyer. “Just shut your mouth, both of you!”

For the first time in their lives, the infallible Peterson family realized that their wealth, their social standing, and their arrogance were not armor enough against a mother protecting her child.
And the worst part for them? This was only the opening salvo.
