Chapter 8 - The Counter-Strike

Within twenty minutes, Mark’s home office had been converted into a makeshift command center. The mahogany desk was buried under printouts of text message logs, bank transfer ledgers, and the threatening letter that had arrived on the porch.

“We aren't going to wait for his attorney to file a motion in Columbus,” Mark said, his fingers flying across his laptop keyboard with practiced speed. He was on speakerphone with a criminal defense colleague based in downtown Pittsburgh. “I want an emergency restraining order filed in Allegheny County first thing Monday morning, backed by an affidavit detailing his intimidation tactics and physical stalking across state lines.”

“And what about the threat regarding her freelance clients?” the voice on the phone asked crisply.

“That constitutes tortious interference with business relations and digital extortion,” Mark replied without missing a beat. “We loop the local FBI field office into the communication trail immediately. Let Derek explain to a federal judge why he’s threatening an extramarital wire campaign against a nursing mother.”

I sat in the corner armchair, gently rocking the portable bassinet where Emily was fast asleep, seemingly immune to the legal war being waged over her future. The initial shock of the photograph had worn off, replaced by a quiet, burning resolve. Derek thought he could intimidate me back into submission with a fifteen-dollar bill and a stolen photo. He didn't realize that by cutting me off, he had accidentally stripped away every reason I had ever had to protect his ego.

Rachel walked over, handing me a fresh cup of tea. “How are you holding up?”

“I’m tired,” I admitted honestly, looking up at my sister. “Part of me just wants to crawl into a hole and hide until all of this goes away.”

“It won't go away by hiding,” Rachel said softly, sitting on the arm of my chair. “Men like Derek rely on the fact that you’ll get exhausted before they do. They wear you down with small cuts until you stop fighting back. But look at what you’ve already done. You walked out in the middle of labor, you drove across state lines, and you brought my niece into a safe home. You’re stronger than you know, Clara.”

Before I could answer, the landline on Mark’s desk let out a sharp, sudden ring.

Mark stopped typing, freezing mid-sentence. The room went dead silent.

“Ignore it,” Rachel said, crossing her arms.

“No,” Mark said slowly, staring at the flashing caller ID box. “It’s not coming from a blocked number. It’s a direct landline trace originating from an Ohio area code... but it’s not Derek’s cell.”

He reached over and hit the speaker button.

“Mark Evans speaking,” he said coolly into the receiver.

A breathless, shaky voice responded immediately on the other end, cutting through the static with urgent panic.

“Mr. Evans? Thank God I found your number. My name is Amanda... I’m Derek Vance’s executive assistant at the firm in Columbus. You need to tell Clara to watch her back. Derek isn't just planning a custody battle—he’s cleaning out the corporate safety deposit box tonight, and he has a private investigator tracking your wife’s phone.”
