Chapter 4 - TWENTY-SEVEN SECONDSThe estate's official security system had twelve cameras, all installed outdoors or near entrances. Daniel knew every one of them because he had approved the layout himself. Rosa, however, led him into the service corridor behind the kitchen and pointed toward an almost invisible black lens hidden above a smoke detector. Daniel stared at it for several seconds before realizing that it was not part of his system.

"Who installed that?"

Rosa shook her head.

"I don't know."

Marcus climbed onto a chair and inspected it.

"No manufacturer label."

Dana Brooks immediately called the police investigator assigned to the case.

Within an hour, technicians were examining the device.

Three more hidden cameras were discovered.

One faced the staircase.

One covered the upstairs hallway.

Another pointed toward the back entrance.

Daniel felt violated, but the greater question was obvious.

Who had installed them?

And why?

The memory card from the staircase camera contained weeks of footage.

Most of it was ordinary.

Lily climbing stairs.

Staff members carrying laundry.

Vanessa walking between rooms.

Then an investigator found a clip lasting twenty-seven seconds.

The date was nine days before the garden party.

Daniel watched it inside his study.

At 8:14 p.m., Lily appeared at the top of the staircase.

Vanessa followed.

There was no sound, but her body language was unmistakable.

She pointed aggressively toward the hallway.

Lily backed away.

Vanessa grabbed her arm.

Then Evelyn entered the frame.

Daniel leaned forward.

His mother handed Vanessa something.

A key.

Vanessa pulled Lily toward the storage closet.

The camera angle did not show the door itself.

But twenty-seven seconds later, Vanessa returned alone.

Daniel stopped the video.

No one spoke.

Officer Moreno finally broke the silence.

"We need copies of everything."

Daniel nodded.

The evidence was growing.

But so was his guilt.

That evening, he drove Lily to a small rental house belonging to Marcus's sister outside the city. Dana had recommended moving temporarily, both for emotional safety and to preserve the estate as part of the investigation.

The rental house was modest compared with the Mercer property.

Two bedrooms.

A small kitchen.

A porch overlooking a narrow lake.

Lily loved it immediately.

There were ducks.

Daniel almost cried watching her laugh at them.

He realized how little a child needed to feel happy.

No marble floors.

No expensive parties.

No perfect photographs.

Just safety.

The legal battle began the next morning.

Vanessa filed for temporary access to Lily, arguing that Daniel had become physically violent and was attempting to alienate the child from her.

Her attorney emphasized the slap.

The shove.

The kick.

Daniel's attorney, Claire Whitman, did not minimize those facts.

"Your actions will be examined," she warned him.

Daniel nodded.

"They should be."

Claire studied him.

"Good answer."

"It isn't an answer. It's the truth."

Claire placed the evidence folder on the table.

"The difference is that the authorities also have video explaining the context."

Daniel looked toward Lily playing on the porch.

"Will Vanessa be able to see her?"

"Not unsupervised."

"That's not what I asked."

Claire understood.

"We'll fight for no contact during the investigation."

Evelyn responded differently.

She did not file anything.

Instead, she began calling people.

Board members.

Family friends.

Business partners.

Daniel discovered this after receiving three separate messages suggesting that he "resolve the family matter privately."

The fourth came from Howard Lane, an old Mercer family attorney.

Howard asked Daniel to meet him.

Daniel refused.

Howard arrived anyway.

They sat outside the rental house while Lily napped.

Howard was nearly seventy.

He had known Daniel since childhood.

"Your mother is frightened," he said.

"Good."

"Daniel."

"Don't."

Howard sighed.

"I'm not defending what happened."

"Then don't ask me to protect her."

"I'm asking you to understand the consequences of turning this into war."

Daniel looked across the lake.

"My daughter was chained to a pillar while people laughed."

Howard lowered his eyes.

"I've seen the video."

"Then why are you here?"

"Because your mother is hiding something else."

Daniel turned.

Howard's face had changed.

"What?"

"I don't know exactly."

"Don't waste my time."

"I'm not."

Howard leaned forward.

"Three weeks ago, Evelyn asked me whether the Mercer Family Trust could be amended if a beneficiary were declared psychologically unfit."

Daniel stared at him.

"Which beneficiary?"

"You."

The answer landed heavily.

Daniel laughed once, without humor.

"My mother was trying to remove me from the trust?"

"She was asking questions."

"Why?"

Howard shook his head.

"She didn't tell me."

Daniel thought about the hidden cameras.

Vanessa's claim that he was unstable.

The staged humiliation of Lily.

Suddenly, the pieces formed a darker pattern.

"What if the party wasn't just cruelty?"

Howard looked at him.

"What are you thinking?"

Daniel stood.

"I'm thinking Vanessa knew I was coming home."

"Daniel—"

"She always tracks my calendar."

He began pacing.

"What if they wanted me to react?"

Howard's eyes narrowed.

"The recording."

Daniel stopped.

"Vanessa was filming before I arrived."

The possibility was horrifying.

What if the chain had served two purposes?

Punish Lily.

Provoke Daniel.

Capture his reaction.

He immediately called Marcus.

"Do you still have the original video?"

"Yes."

"What time did Vanessa start recording?"

Marcus checked.

"Why?"

"Just tell me."

A pause.

"4:42."

Daniel checked his own phone.

His message to Vanessa announcing he was leaving work early had been sent at 4:35.

Seven minutes earlier.

Daniel felt cold.

They had known he was coming.

He contacted Officer Moreno.

By evening, investigators had requested Vanessa's messages.

The answer appeared two days later.

One deleted message had been recovered from Evelyn's phone.

It had been sent to Vanessa thirty minutes before Daniel arrived.

Three words.

MAKE HIM REACT.

Daniel read the message twice.

Claire stood beside him.

"This changes things."

Daniel looked through the window.

Lily was drawing at the kitchen table.

In crayon, she had drawn a small house beside a lake.

Two stick figures stood outside.

One large.

One tiny.

There was no Vanessa.

No Evelyn.

Daniel looked back at the recovered message.

They had used his daughter.

Not only as a target.

As bait.

Something inside him became perfectly calm.

"I want everything uncovered."

Claire nodded.

"It may get ugly."

May you like

Daniel looked at Lily.

"It already did."
