Chapter 4 - THE MOTHER WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

PART 4 SUMMARY: Evidence suggests Brooke went directly from the church to the house where Grace had been held. But the investigation takes a devastating turn when Luke discovers someone inside his own family helped Brooke separate him from Grace long before the abduction began.
By evening, Brooke Whitmore had become the most wanted person in Luke Bennett’s world.
Police had not yet publicly named her a suspect, but Detective Collins no longer spoke about the situation as a misunderstanding.
Security footage showed Brooke leaving the chapel parking lot in a white SUV registered to her mother.
Traffic cameras picked up that SUV heading toward the highway leading to Mason’s rental property.
Then it vanished.
Luke sat outside Grace’s hospital room staring at the yellow envelope when his mother arrived.
Diane Bennett still wore the silver-gray dress she had chosen for her son’s wedding.
She looked twenty years older.
“Luke.”
He didn’t answer.
She sat across from him.
“I need to tell you something.”
Luke looked up.
Her hands were trembling.
“What?”
“When Grace disappeared…I knew Brooke had spoken to her.”
Every muscle in Luke’s body tightened.
“When?”
“Before.”
“How long before?”
Diane began crying.
“A few days.”
Luke stood.
“You knew Brooke was involved?”
“Not like this.”
“Then what did you know?”
Diane glanced toward Grace’s door.
“I thought Grace was going to leave you.”
“Because Brooke told you?”
Diane nodded.
Months earlier, Brooke had shown Diane screenshots supposedly taken from Grace’s phone. They appeared to show Grace discussing a move to another state and planning to keep Ava away from Luke.
Diane had already disliked the instability in Luke and Grace’s relationship.
She panicked.
Brooke offered to “handle it quietly.”
Luke stared at his mother.
“What does that mean?”
“She said she could convince Grace to sign an agreement.”
“And you let her?”
“I gave her Grace’s work schedule.”
Luke stepped backward.
The corridor seemed to tilt.
Diane reached for him.
“I thought I was protecting you.”
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
Her hand fell.
“There’s more.”
Of course there was.
Three weeks after Grace vanished, Diane received an envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter from Grace.
She had begged Diane to tell Luke that Ava needed him.
Luke’s voice became barely audible.
“You had a letter?”
“I gave it to Brooke.”
“Why?”
“She said it was manipulation. She said Grace was trying to pull you back into a custody fight.”
“Did you read it?”
Diane sobbed.
“Yes.”
Luke looked through the glass panel of the hospital door.
Grace lay sleeping.
Ava was curled beside her.
For months, Luke had imagined himself as the abandoned one.
Now the truth was stripping that comfort away piece by piece.
“You destroyed my family.”
Diane flinched.
“I made a terrible mistake.”
“No. A mistake is forgetting an appointment. You had a letter from my daughter’s mother begging for help.”
“I didn’t know she was being held.”
“You made sure I never had the chance to find out.”
Diane covered her face.
Luke wanted to scream.
Instead, Detective Collins appeared at the end of the hallway.
“Mr. Bennett.”
Luke turned.
“We found Mason’s vehicle.”
“Where?”
“Airport parking garage.”
“Did he fly out?”
“We’re checking.”
Collins glanced at Diane.
“We also recovered something from the house.”
She held up an evidence photograph.
A small digital recorder.
Grace had hidden it beneath a loose floorboard.
The device contained several recordings.
In one, Mason could be heard arguing with Brooke.
Brooke’s voice was unmistakable.
“She doesn’t leave until after the wedding.”
Mason replied, “This was supposed to be two weeks.”
“Plans changed.”
“She’s pregnant.”
“I know.”
“What happens when Bennett finds out?”
There was a long silence.
Then Brooke said, “By then I’ll be his wife.”
Luke’s face drained.
Collins continued playing.
Mason demanded more money.
Brooke accused him of losing control.
Then came the sentence that changed the investigation.
“I didn’t pay you to hurt her. I paid you to keep her invisible.”
Grace had recorded enough to prove Brooke knew about the confinement.
But Mason’s reply complicated everything.
“You started this, Brooke. But your friend signed the first check.”
Luke looked sharply at Collins.
“What friend?”
“That’s what we’re trying to determine.”
Diane suddenly sat down.
Too quickly.
Luke noticed.
“Mom?”
She looked terrified.
“What?”
“You know something.”
“No.”
Detective Collins watched her.
Luke stepped closer.
“Who signed the first check?”
Diane shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
But her purse slipped from her lap.
Several items spilled across the floor.
A wallet.
Keys.
A folded tissue.
And an old bank receipt.
Diane lunged for it.
Luke picked it up first.
The transfer was dated two days before Grace disappeared.
Payee: Whitmore Risk Consulting.
Sender: Diane Bennett.
Luke stared at his mother.
Diane began shaking her head desperately.
“I can explain.”
Before she could, Ava screamed from inside Grace’s hospital room.
Luke spun toward the door.
Grace’s bed was empty.
The bathroom door stood open.
May you like
The window beside the bed had been raised.
And on Grace’s pillow lay a white envelope that had not been there seconds earlier.
