Chapter 14 - THE WOMAN IN ROOM 307

We drove to the hospital.

Nobody spoke.

The silence was unbearable.

Sarah.

Alive.

Maybe.

Or someone using her name.

When we reached Room 307, two security officers stood outside.

One of them stopped us.

"Family only."

"I'm her husband," Mark said.

The officer checked the chart.

"Only one person."

Mark looked at me.

I nodded.

He entered.

A few minutes later, he came out crying.

"She's awake."

My heart raced.

"Who is it?"

He shook his head.

"I don't know."

"What do you mean?"

"She says her name is Sarah."

"Is she?"

"I don't know."

We entered together.

A woman lay in the hospital bed.

Her face was bruised.

Her hair was dark.

She looked older.

Tired.

But when she looked at Lily...

she smiled.

"Sweetheart."

Lily froze.

I held her hand.

The woman reached toward her.

Lily took one step forward.

"Mommy?"

The woman began crying.

"Yes."

Mark collapsed beside the bed.

"Sarah."

She looked at him.

"I'm sorry."

He held her hand.

"Where have you been?"

"Running."

"From who?"

"Everyone."

She looked at me.

"Especially you."

I frowned.

"Why me?"

"Because they knew you'd never stop looking."

I sat down.

"Tell me everything."

Sarah looked at Lily.

"Not here."

"Why?"

She pointed toward the ceiling.

"Because the hospital isn't safe."

At that exact moment, the lights flickered.

Sarah grabbed my hand.

"He's here."

"Who?"

She whispered:

"Daniel."

The lights went out.

A scream came from the hallway.

Then footsteps.

Security guards shouted.

A gunshot echoed.

Mark pulled Lily beneath the bed.

I moved beside Sarah.

The door opened.

A figure stepped inside.

I raised my hand.

"Who are you?"

The figure removed his mask.

Michael.

"It's me."

I exhaled.

"What happened?"

"Daniel's men are downstairs."

"How many?"

"Six."

Sarah sat up.

"We need to leave."

"You're too weak."

"I won't stay here."

Michael pulled a wheelchair from the corner.

"We have three minutes."

We moved quickly.

Sarah was pushed into the hallway.

The hospital had become chaos.

Alarms were sounding.

People were running.

A nurse screamed.

Then another gunshot.

Michael led us through a service corridor.

We reached a loading dock.

A black van waited.

We climbed inside.

The doors slammed shut.

The vehicle sped away.

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

Then Sarah looked at Lily.

"My baby."

Lily began crying.

"I thought you were dead."

Sarah pulled her close.

"I thought I would never see you again."

I looked away.

I couldn't bear watching.

After three years of grief, my daughter was holding her child again.

Then Sarah whispered:

"Thomas."

I looked at her.

"There is something you need to know."

"What?"

"Your father didn't start the trust."

"Then who did?"

Sarah hesitated.

"Your mother."

I froze.

"My mother died when I was ten."

"I know."

"Then how?"

Sarah reached into her coat.

She pulled out an old letter.

"This was written before you were born."

I opened it.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

My mother's.

The first sentence read:

Thomas, if you ever learn what your father did, you must protect my granddaughter.

I looked at Sarah.

"Why?"

May you like

She whispered:

"Because your family has been protecting the wrong secret for fifty years."
