Chapter 2

Nolan Ashford had returned early from Manhattan.

At thirty-five years old, he was the secret, undisputed head of the Ashford organization. He was handsome as a classic movie star, exuding a deeply masculine, terrifying aura that commanded absolute obedience. He wore a flawlessly tailored dark three-piece suit, a crisp dress shirt, a heavy family signet ring, and polished leather shoes. The natural sunlight highlighted his fair, rosy skin and the cold, sharp, intimidating depth of his eyes.

He stepped through the parlor doorway, expecting to find an empty room. Instead, the scene before him made his blood run completely cold.

Nolan froze. His intimidating gaze swept the room in a fraction of a second. He saw Marcus standing idly by with a smug expression. He saw his fiancée, Celeste, towering over the grand piano. He saw the young maid slumped against the polished wood, trembling in terror.

And then, he saw the little girl.

Nora was lying on the cold marble, weeping, her small cardigan twisted around her fragile shoulders.

The calculating, icy Mafia boss vanished. Moving with a swift, explosive grace that defied his heavy tailored suit, Nolan crossed the expansive parlor. He didn't say a single word to Celeste or Marcus. He bypassed them entirely, his polished shoes silent against the stone, and knelt directly beside the crying child on the floor.

"I have you," Nolan murmured, his voice deep, slightly raspy, and naturally authoritative. He gently slid his large, masculine hands beneath the toddler and lifted Nora safely into his arms.

As he pulled her against his chest, something incredible happened. The little girl’s terrified sobs abruptly hitched. Nora stopped crying. She rested her small hands against the lapels of his dark suit, tilting her head back to look up at him.

The cinematic, bright sunlight poured over their faces. Nolan stared down at the child. He saw the exact shape of his own jawline. He saw the familiar, sharp arch of his own brow. He saw his own piercing, distinct blue eyes staring back at him.

Nora looked intently straight into his face, her innocent brow furrowing in profound confusion.

"Mommy…" Nora whispered, her tiny American accent echoing clearly in the dead silence of the parlor. "Why does he look just like me?"

Mae, still slumped against the side of the piano, went completely, terrifyingly still. Her fair face drained of all color, turning as white as her starched apron. She looked at Nolan, a raw, unspoken panic exploding in her eyes.

Celeste’s cruel, triumphant expression changed instantly. The arrogant smirk vanished, replaced by a sudden, violent flash of sheer panic. The secret she had spent years burying had just spoken its first sentence.

"Put her down, Nolan," Celeste demanded, her voice pitching an octave higher as desperation clawed at her throat. "Right now."

Nolan did not move. He held the little girl closer, his cold eyes slowly shifting from the child’s face to the trembling maid, the gears of his brilliant, dangerous mind beginning to turn.
