Chapter 9 - THE SECOND DAUGHTER’S SECRET

Claire asked Ryan to send Lily upstairs before she spoke.
He refused.
Not because Lily should hear adult secrets.
Because he no longer trusted private rooms.
The social worker took both girls to the backyard instead.
Emma and Lily drew chalk circles on the patio while Ryan sat across from Claire in the kitchen where they had eaten breakfast as a family for nine years.
The same table.
Different life.
“What fertility treatment?” he asked.
Claire folded her hands.
“After we tried for a year, I saw a specialist.”
“You told me the doctor said we were fine.”
“He did.”
“Then?”
“Your mother offered help.”
Ryan laughed bitterly.
“Of course she did.”
June connected Claire with Dr. Elaine Ward.
The same fertility specialist involved in Emma’s conception.
Ryan’s stomach turned.
Claire underwent a monitored cycle.
One procedure.
She became pregnant with Lily.
“Why hide that from me?”
“I was ashamed.”
“Why?”
“Because June told me you would feel defective.”
Ryan stared.
“My mother said that?”
“Yes.”
“And you believed her.”
“I was scared.”
Again.
Fear as inheritance.
Ryan asked the question slowly.
“Whose genetic material did they use?”
Claire’s eyes widened.
“Yours. I thought yours.”
“You thought?”
“I signed papers naming you.”
Ryan stood.
Detective Ellison obtained the clinic records by emergency subpoena.
Dr. Ward had retired.
Her archived files were incomplete.
But the lab accession numbers existed.
Lily’s conception involved Ryan’s stored sample from the accident.
The same unauthorized collection.
Ryan felt nauseated.
Both daughters had been conceived using tissue taken from him while he was incapacitated.
One without his knowledge.
One without full disclosure to Claire.
June had turned a violation into a family resource.
Then forensic genetics revealed something unexpected.
Emma and Lily were not merely paternal half-sisters.
They shared an unusual cluster of maternal markers too.
Not enough to be full sisters.
Enough to indicate their mothers were biologically related.
Claire stared at the report.
“That’s impossible.”
Rachel looked equally stunned.
Detective Ellison asked whether Claire knew her biological parents.
Claire went still.
She had been adopted.
Closed adoption.
Raised in New Jersey.
She knew nothing beyond a birth mother’s first name listed in non-identifying records.
Evelyn.
Ryan’s skin chilled.
Rachel’s mother was Evelyn Vale.
Claire’s adoption file named Evelyn too.
The probability became unbearable.
Records were opened through court order.
Claire and Rachel were maternal half-sisters.
Evelyn had given birth to Claire at seventeen and placed her for adoption.
Years later, she had Rachel with Michael Mercer.
Ryan stared at Claire.
His wife and Rachel were sisters.
Emma’s mother was Claire’s sister.
Lily and Emma shared Ryan as father and shared maternal grandmother through different daughters.
June knew.
Of course she knew.
The architecture of her plan snapped into view.
She had not merely tied Ryan to Rachel.
She had chosen Claire too.
Ryan’s relationship with Claire began after a scholarship gala organized by a Mercer foundation.
June had insisted Ryan attend.
Claire was there as a consultant.
At the time, it seemed accidental.
Maybe it was not.
Claire whispered, “Your mother introduced us.”
Ryan remembered.
June had walked him across the room.
“Ryan, meet Claire Bennett. She’s too sensible for people like us.”
A joke.
A setup.
June had known Claire’s biological identity.
She had placed Evelyn’s abandoned daughter in Ryan’s path and later used the same stored genetic material to help conceive Lily.
Why?
Rachel began crying.
“She wanted all of us connected.”
Ryan shook his head.
“No one controls this much by accident.”
Detective Ellison searched June’s private correspondence.
Buried in a foundation archive was a letter to Victor Sloan.
SUBJECT: REUNIFICATION.
June wrote:
EVELYN’S CHILDREN SHOULD NOT REMAIN STRANGERS. RYAN SHOULD NOT GROW INTO MICHAEL’S HABIT OF DIVIDING PEOPLE INTO LEGITIMATE AND ILLEGITIMATE LIVES. I CAN CORRECT THIS IF I AM CAREFUL.
Ryan slammed the paper down.
“She thought she was correcting people.”
Claire looked shattered.
“She chose me for you.”
“Maybe introduced us. I chose you.”
The distinction mattered.
Ryan refused to let June steal every genuine thing from his past.
He had fallen in love with Claire.
Claire had fallen in love with him.
Lily’s laughter was real.
Emma’s fear was real.
A manipulator could arrange circumstances without owning every outcome.
Then another document appeared.
A posthumous directive June had left with Victor.
IF RYAN AND CLAIRE HAVE A CHILD, RELEASE RACHEL FROM ALL CONFIDENTIALITY AT THE CHILD’S FIFTH BIRTHDAY.
Lily was four.
June had planned for the truth to emerge next year.
Victor had accelerated events.
Why?
The trust audit answered.
At Lily’s fifth birthday, control over a dormant Mercer holding trust would automatically shift from Victor Sloan to Ryan and any recognized descendants.
Victor would lose management authority over approximately eighty-four million dollars.
He had one year left.
Emma’s existence complicated the transfer.
If she disappeared, Victor could delay recognition.
If Rachel was declared unstable or missing, he could petition for guardianship.
If Ryan remained ignorant, Victor stayed in control.
This was not June’s plan anymore.
It was Victor’s theft.
Ryan looked at his daughters through the window.
Emma showed Lily how to draw a moon.
Lily showed Emma how to draw a cat that looked like a potato.
The money suddenly felt obscene.
“Freeze everything,” Ryan told Nathaniel—no, wrong life again. Here his trust counsel was Rebecca Sloan, unrelated to Victor. “Every account Victor can touch.”
His attorney nodded.
Within hours, emergency court orders suspended Victor’s authority.
At 6:40 p.m., Victor called again.
His voice was no longer calm.
“You don’t understand what you’ve done.”
Ryan answered, “I understand exactly.”
“You froze assets that fund half the family entities.”
“Good.”
“You’ll collapse everything.”
“Then it was built wrong.”
Silence.
Victor whispered, “June would be ashamed of you.”
Ryan looked at Emma and Lily.
“No. June would recognize me.”
Then Victor said one thing that changed the chase.
“You think Rachel found you by accident?”
Ryan’s grip tightened.
“She didn’t run to Claire. I sent her there.”
The line went dead.
Rachel stared.
If Victor had sent her toward Claire, then the hidden-wall discovery had not interrupted his plan.
It might have been part of it.

Keep reading in Chapter 10, because Victor wanted Ryan to find Emma—and the reason was hidden inside a trust clause that could transfer control only if Ryan publicly acknowledged her as his daughter.
