Chapter 15 - THE NIGHT MY FATHER DIED

Eleanor was admitted to a secure hospital unit, where specialists began evaluating her health and reviewing the medication records recovered from Briarwood.

Detective Carter assigned officers to protect her around the clock.

The investigation had now expanded beyond financial fraud and unlawful confinement. We had evidence suggesting that someone had deliberately interfered with Eleanor's treatment, concealed Victoria's identity, and potentially manipulated medical records connected to my father's death.

But Eleanor's statement raised a question that haunted me.

If Victoria had witnessed the night my father died, why had Vanessa kept her hidden?

And why had she gone to such lengths to prevent Emily from exposing the financial scheme?

I visited Eleanor the following morning.

She was sitting beside the window in her hospital room, wrapped in a pale blue blanket.

When she saw me, she smiled faintly.

“You look like Richard.”

“I've heard that before.”

She gestured toward the chair beside her bed.

“Sit down, Daniel. There's something I need to tell you.”

I sat.

She stared at her hands.

“Your father came to see me three months before he died. He had found out that Victoria was alive, and he wanted me to help him bring her home.”

“Why didn't you go with him?”

“Because I was afraid.”

“Of Vanessa?”

“Of what she had become.”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“Vanessa was always clever. When we were children, she could convince anyone that she had done nothing wrong. If something broke, she would cry until someone blamed me. If she stole something, she would return it before anyone noticed.”

She sighed.

“I thought she would outgrow it.”

“What happened in 1998?”

Eleanor looked toward the window.

“That was the year Victoria disappeared.”

She explained that Victoria had been living with her mother while studying nursing. Vanessa had been working for a private medical-services company and had recently become involved with a businessman who used several aliases.

Eleanor didn't know his real name.

She knew only that he had money, influence, and connections to private security firms.

Victoria had discovered that he was involved in fraudulent medical billing and the falsification of patient records.

She threatened to report him.

Within days, she disappeared.

Vanessa claimed that Victoria had gone abroad voluntarily.

Several weeks later, the family received news that Victoria had died in an accident.

The funeral was closed-casket.

The death certificate contained inconsistencies.

But Eleanor was grieving and frightened, and she accepted the explanation because she believed she had no other choice.

“Your father never accepted it,” she said. “He searched for years. When he finally found Victoria, she was living under another name and was terrified of returning home.”

“Why didn't he bring her back immediately?”

“Because she believed Vanessa would hurt her. She refused to leave until she had enough evidence to expose the people who had taken her.”

I thought of the hidden recording.

My father had spent years trying to uncover a network of financial and medical crimes.

He had probably believed that bringing Victoria home would also bring the scheme to an end.

“What happened on the night he died?” I asked.

Eleanor's face tightened.

“He called me shortly before midnight. He said he had finally obtained proof that someone had altered his medical records.”

“Did he say who?”

“No. He told me to keep the telephone line open because he might need to call again.”

She swallowed.

“He never did.”

I felt my throat tighten.

“Did the police investigate?”

“The doctors said he had suffered a sudden cardiac event. Your family was devastated. There was no reason for anyone to suspect murder.”

“Except the altered report.”

“Yes.”

Eleanor looked at me.

“Your father knew something was wrong, but he didn't know how far the conspiracy went. He believed that if he could expose the financial transfers, the people involved would be forced to reveal themselves.”

“Did Victoria see what happened?”

Eleanor nodded slowly.

“She told me years later that she had been there.”

I froze.

“Where?”

“At the clinic.”

“St. Andrew's?”

“Yes.”

“Why was she there?”

“She had gone to meet your father. He had asked her to bring the original medical report.”

I remembered the hidden compartment and the documents Emily had found.

“Did she see him die?”

Eleanor's eyes filled with tears.

“She heard an argument. She said someone entered the room and told your father that he had been given one last chance to cooperate.”

“Who?”

“She didn't know. She was hiding in an adjoining office.”

“What happened next?”

Eleanor pressed her hands together.

“She heard your father say that he would never sign the transfer documents. Then she heard a crash.”

My stomach turned.

“She came out and found him on the floor.”

I stared at her.

“Was anyone else there?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Eleanor looked directly at me.

“Vanessa.”

The room seemed to shrink around me.

“Are you certain?”

“Victoria told me that she saw Vanessa standing beside your father. She was holding a small bottle.”

I could barely breathe.

“Did Victoria tell the police?”

“No. Vanessa found her before she could leave the clinic. She threatened to make sure Victoria was blamed for your father's death.”

Eleanor began to cry.

“She said she had enough evidence to prove Victoria had been stealing medication and falsifying records. She told Victoria that if she went to the police, she would spend the rest of her life in prison.”

“And Victoria believed her?”

“She had already been living under a false identity for years. She had no money, no documents, and no one she trusted. Vanessa convinced her that every authority she approached would be controlled by the same people.”

I leaned back.

The truth was more terrible than I had imagined.

My father had been investigating the people responsible for his daughter's disappearance.

He had discovered financial fraud and medical corruption.

And on the night he died, he had confronted the woman who had been manipulating both.

Vanessa.

I stood and walked to the window.

For years, I had blamed myself for not recognizing the warning signs before Emily disappeared. Now I wondered how much of my life had been shaped by someone who had studied my family long before I met her.

Eleanor's voice interrupted my thoughts.

“Daniel, there is something else.”

I turned.

“Your father left a final message for Victoria. He told her that if she ever found herself in danger, she should contact his son.”

“Me?”

Eleanor nodded.

“He said you were the only person who could be trusted to protect her.”

My chest tightened.

“But I never knew she existed.”

“Your father believed you would find out when the time was right.”

I thought of the pendant.

The letter.

The recording.

He had left clues throughout his life, hoping that one day someone would put them together.

Perhaps he had believed that truth would eventually survive the people trying to destroy it.

My phone vibrated.

Detective Carter.

I answered.

“We've identified the account that paid Dr. Mercer,” he said. “It's connected to a private foundation registered under Vanessa's name.”

“Can you arrest her?”

“Not yet. We need to establish the full extent of her involvement and locate the original medical records.”

“What about Victoria?”

“We've found a possible location.”

My heart leaped.

“Where?”

“A property owned by a company connected to Vanessa's brother. It's an old private residence outside the city. We have reason to believe someone has been staying there under a false identity.”

I looked at Eleanor.

She was watching me.

“Do you think it's her?” I asked.

“We don't know. But we're preparing to investigate.”

“I'm coming with you.”

“No, Daniel. You're staying with the family.”

“Detective—”

“We've already had one attempted abduction and an attack at Briarwood. If Victoria is there, we need to approach carefully. We cannot risk alerting Mercer.”

I clenched my jaw.

Then I looked at Eleanor.

“Please,” she whispered. “Bring my daughter home.”

I closed my eyes.

“I will.”

But as I ended the call, another message appeared on my phone.

It came from Vanessa.

I KNOW WHERE YOU ARE. I KNOW WHAT ELEANOR TOLD YOU.

A second message followed.

IF YOU WANT VICTORIA ALIVE, COME TO THE OLD CLINIC TONIGHT. ALONE.

I stared at the screen.

May you like

Then the final message appeared.

BRING THE ORIGINAL REPORT, OR YOUR SISTER DIES.
