Chapter 9 - The Promise

Enzo gently turned me around to face him.
He opened the velvet box, revealing a massive, flawless diamond ring.
It sparkled fiercely under the bedroom chandelier, completely taking my breath away.
"Enzo," I gasped, covering my mouth with my hands.
"I told you from the very beginning that your life belonged to me," he said softly.
"But I never told you that my life belongs entirely to you."
He dropped to one knee, looking up at me with absolute devotion.
"You saved my son, Clara."
"You saved my soul."
"Will you marry me, and let me spend the rest of my miserable life trying to deserve you?"
Tears streamed down my face, hot and unstoppable.
I thought about the lonely, struggling waitress I was just a few months ago.
I thought about the cold apartment, the empty bank account, and the feeling of being entirely invisible.
That girl was gone forever.
"Yes," I cried, pulling him up from the floor.
"Yes, Enzo, I will marry you."
He slid the heavy, beautiful ring onto my finger, sealing his promise forever.
He kissed me deeply, lifting me off the ground and carrying me toward the bed.
The passion between us was no longer driven by fear or adrenaline.
It was driven by pure, unconditional love and a deep, unbreakable trust.
We spent the rest of the evening tangled in the silk sheets, talking about our future.
Enzo promised to step back from the violent side of the family business.
He wanted to focus on legitimate real estate and spend more time raising Leo.
"I want to have more children," Enzo whispered, tracing the scars on my back with a gentle finger.
"I want a little girl with your beautiful eyes."
I smiled, resting my head against his chest, listening to his steady heartbeat.
"I think Leo would like a little sister," I agreed happily.
For the first time in my entire life, I felt truly safe.
I was protected by a man who would move heaven and earth to keep me smiling.
I was loved by a little boy who called me his angel.
The scars on my back would always be there, a permanent reminder of the night my life changed.

But they were no longer a symbol of pain.
They were the beautiful, shattered path that led me exactly to where I was always meant to be.
