Three-year-old Owen was shoved into the deep koi pond even though Celeste knew he could not swim.

Chapter 1

Victor tried to stand.

Valentina did not let him.

Not with her hands.

With one look.

He remained beside the overturned bonsai trolley while moss pads and nursery labels lay around his polished shoes.

Celeste was breathing hard beneath the tilted shade rack.

Her confidence had not disappeared completely.

That interested Valentina.

A woman who had nearly drowned a three-year-old should have been begging.

Celeste was watching the exits.

Valentina turned away from both of them.

Owen came first.

He was wrapped in two dry tablecloths on a padded bench while the conservatory’s emergency physician listened to his lungs.

Valentina crouched beside him.

Her wet hair clung to her cheek.

One hand rested on Owen’s back.

His small fingers would not release her blouse.

“Stay.”

His voice was hoarse.

Valentina’s eyes softened.

“I’m here.”

Only after the physician confirmed Owen was breathing normally did she rise.

Victor took a slow breath.

“Valentina.”

Her eyes moved toward him.

His voice lost some of its certainty.

“It wasn't supposed to become this.”

The entire room seemed to shrink around the sentence.

Celeste looked at him sharply.

Valentina noticed.

She walked toward Victor.

Her heels left wet prints across the stone.

“What wasn't supposed to become what?”

Victor’s jaw tightened.

He had spent thirty years advising men who became dangerous whenever they felt cornered.

He knew silence.

So did Valentina.

She gave him plenty of it.

Victor finally looked away.

Celeste recovered first.

“It was discipline.”

Valentina turned.

“For a three-year-old?”

“He’s spoiled.”

Celeste’s chin lifted again.

“He screams whenever he doesn't get what he wants. Everybody treats him like glass because he's yours.”

Valentina’s fingers slowly curled.

Victor watched them.

He expected violence.

She gave him a question instead.

“Why did you hold me back?”

No answer.

Valentina looked toward security chief Nolan Price.

“Lock down every camera recording from this conservatory.”

Nolan hesitated.

That hesitation changed the air.

“What?”

He swallowed.

“The koi-garden camera wasn't recording.”

Victor’s breathing changed.

Barely.

Valentina heard it anyway.

“When did it stop?”

Nolan checked his tablet.

“Four minutes before Owen went into the water.”

Celeste’s eyes moved toward Victor.

Valentina followed them.

Nolan continued.

“It wasn't a malfunction.”

Victor closed his eyes for half a second.

“The camera was manually disabled.”

Valentina’s voice dropped.

“By who?”

Nolan stared at the screen.

Then at Victor.

“His old administrator profile.”

The cruelty in the koi garden had not simply happened where nobody could record it.

Someone had made sure of that first.
