Chapter 21 - The Letter Beneath the StoneThree weeks after the memorial, Noah called me from the cemetery.

His voice was so quiet I almost didn't hear him.

“Uncle Dan, you need to come here.”

I found him standing beside Claire's memorial stone, holding a small envelope.

“Where did you get that?”

“It was under the loose marble panel. The one they said was empty.”

The envelope was sealed with dark red wax.

My name was written across the front in Claire's handwriting.

Not a copy.

Not a synthetic imitation.

The real thing.

I knew because she had always crossed the t in my name too aggressively, as though even letters needed to be corrected.

Inside was a single page.

Daniel,

If you're reading this, then either I was right about the danger or I was wrong about how long I had.

There is something I never told you about Dad's company. Carter Meridian was not built only on money. It was built on a promise. A promise Dad made to someone before we were born.

The promise is buried in the original foundation records.

Do not trust anyone who tells you the company is only a business.

And whatever happens, do not let Noah inherit a lie.

At the bottom was a location.

THE OLD MERIDIAN PLANT — BUILDING C.

Noah looked at me.

“What does it mean?”

I folded the letter.

“I don't know yet.”

“But you're going to find out.”

It wasn't a question.

That night, I searched the company archives.

The old Meridian plant had been closed for nearly twenty years after a chemical fire. Most of the records had been digitized, but Building C was missing from every official map.

The next morning, Susan called.

“Daniel, where did you get that address?”

I told her.

She went silent.

Then she said, “Your father made me promise never to discuss Building C unless Claire asked.”

“Why would Claire ask?”

“Because she was the only person who knew what was inside.”

Before I could answer, Susan lowered her voice.

“Daniel, there is one more thing. Your father didn't own Carter Meridian when he died.”

“What?”

“He was the public face. The controlling trust belonged to someone else.”

“Who?”

A pause.

Then:

“An entity called Northstar.”

I looked down at Claire's letter.

Do not trust anyone who tells you the company is only a business.

Outside my window, a dark blue sedan rolled slowly past the house.

This time, it had no cracked headlight.
