Chapter 28 - The Woman Who SurvivedThe old courthouse had been closed for renovations for nearly a year.

Its marble corridors smelled of dust and wet stone.
Ruiz insisted on coming with me.
Noah stayed with Susan and a protective officer.
At the end of the second-floor hallway, a woman stood beneath a broken clock.
She was perhaps forty-five, with dark hair, a narrow face, and a scar running from her left temple to her jaw.
I stopped walking.
I knew that face.
Not from photographs.
From memory.
From a childhood summer when my father had brought a stranger to the lake house and told Claire and me to stay upstairs.
The woman looked at me.
“Daniel Carter.”
“Who are you?”
“My name is Mara Cole.”
The world seemed to contract around those words.
“You're dead.”
“No,” she said. “Claire made sure the world believed I was.”
Ruiz raised her weapon.
“Hands where I can see them.”
Mara slowly lifted both hands.
“I am not here to hurt anyone.”
“Then explain.”
Mara looked at me.
“Your father had a daughter before he married your mother.”
I stared at her.
“What?”
“Me.”
The courthouse seemed to tilt.
She continued.
“Adrian Vale discovered that your father had hidden assets outside Northstar. He wanted those assets returned. Your father refused. Claire found out and helped him protect them.”
“Why would Claire fake your death?”
“Because I was the original trustee protector.”
The burned name.
Mara Vale.
Not Mara Cole.
Mara looked toward the courthouse windows.
“Northstar had been trying to locate me for years. Claire created a false identity and staged my death. She used my name in the cremation record because it was the only way to make the false trail believable.”
I remembered the envelope at the crematorium.
The silver chain.
The name.
“You knew Claire was going to die?”
Mara's face tightened.
“I knew she was in danger. I didn't know Vanessa would strike her. I didn't know Marcus would drug her. I didn't know Elliot would finish it.”
“Then why didn't you stop them?”
“Because I was trying to expose the entire network. Claire believed the only way to protect Noah was to let the criminals reveal themselves.”
My hands curled into fists.
“She died for a plan.”
“She died because the people around her chose greed over mercy.”
Mara stepped closer.
“Claire left one final instruction. If Daniel finds the truth, bring him to the place where the company began.”
“Building C?”
Mara shook her head.
“No. The lake house.”
My phone buzzed.
A message from Noah.
UNCLE DAN. SOMEONE IS OUTSIDE.
May you like
Then another.
THEY KNOW WHERE I AM.
