Chapter 10 - The Horizon of LightSix months later.

The morning sun rose over a quiet, beautiful stretch of the Pacific coastline, casting a golden, shimmering glow across the white sands of a secluded beach in Northern California.
There were no massive iron gates here. No high brick walls. No secret partitions or hidden rooms. Just the rhythmic, soothing crash of ocean waves against the shore and the salty breeze carrying the smell of pine and salt.
Our new home was a modest, beautiful single-story wooden house with wide glass windows facing the open ocean.
I stood on the back wooden deck, holding a mug of steaming coffee in one hand, watching the horizon where the blue sky melted seamlessly into the deep Pacific.
From inside the house, the sound of laughter drifted through the open screen door.
"Catch him, Buster! Catch the ball!" Leo shouted, his voice ringing with pure, unadulterated childhood joy.
A moment later, a brown-and-white golden retriever puppy bounded across the wooden deck, chased closely by a ten-year-old boy running as fast as his legs could carry him, his laughter echoing against the surf.
Leo was tanned, strong, and brimming with life. The pale, ghost-like child who had emerged from the dark drywall six months ago was gone forever, replaced by a vibrant boy who no longer feared the dark because he knew the light was always waiting outside.
Leo stopped running, bending down to hug the panting puppy, then looked up and caught my eye across the deck.
He smiled—a big, radiant grin—and waved his hand enthusiastically.
"Come on, Daddy! The waves are amazing!"
I smiled back, taking a final sip of my coffee, setting the mug down on the wooden railing.

The past was a closed book, locked away behind prison bars where it belonged. The walls around us were made of glass and sunlight, open to the world, the wind, and the endless horizon.
I stepped down off the deck, kicked off my shoes, and ran across the warm sand to join my son in the sun.
