Chapter 1 - THE FOOTSTEPS IN THE DARK “Stop it, please. You’re breaking his arm!”

“Stop it, please. You’re breaking his arm!”
Lily Carter’s scream shattered the silence of the Blackwood mansion.
Fourteen-month-old Ethan lay on the marble floor, his tiny face twisted with terror. His cries came in short, desperate bursts as Serena Montigue dragged him by the wrist.
His arm bent at an angle that made Lily’s stomach turn.
“Let him go!”
Lily ran barefoot across the foyer.
Serena released the child for half a second.
Then her heel drove into Lily’s stomach.
Pain exploded through Lily’s body.
She crashed backward, her head striking the polished floor. Above her, the enormous chandelier blurred into a circle of white light.
Then Ethan cried again.
That sound pulled her back.
Lily crawled toward him.
One inch.
Then another.
Serena stepped on the hem of her uniform.
“Touch him again,” she whispered, “and you disappear.”
Lily looked up at the woman.
Serena was beautiful.
Elegant.
Perfect.
The same woman photographed beside charity foundations and political donors. The woman Chicago society adored.
The woman who was supposed to marry Victor Blackwood in six weeks.
“You think anyone will believe a cheap nanny over me?”
Lily's hands trembled.
“Ethan needs a doctor.”
“He needs discipline.”
“He’s a baby.”
Serena smiled.
“He’s a Blackwood.”
Then the lights flickered.
A door opened somewhere beyond the west corridor.
Footsteps crossed the marble.
Slow.
Heavy.
Controlled.
Serena froze.
Lily turned.
Victor Blackwood stepped out of the darkness.

Black coat.
No tie.
Rain shining on his shoulders.
Two security men followed him.
Nobody had expected him home until morning.
Victor looked at Ethan.
Then Lily.
Then Serena.
His expression remained perfectly still.
That was more frightening than anger.
“What happened?”
Serena moved first.
“Victor…”
Her voice cracked with practiced perfection.
“She lost control.”
Lily stared at her.
Serena pointed.
“The nanny attacked Ethan. I tried to stop her.”
Victor looked at Lily.
“Is that true?”
Lily opened her mouth.
Fear closed it.
Serena leaned closer.
“Tell him.”
Victor’s eyes hardened.

“Serena.”
She stepped back.
Victor crossed the room and knelt beside his son.
Ethan reached toward him with his uninjured arm.
“Daddy…”
For one brief second, something broke across Victor’s face.
Then it disappeared.
He lifted Ethan carefully.
“Call Dr. Moreno.”
Marco Ruiz moved immediately.
Victor turned toward Lily.
“Can you stand?”
“I… I don't know.”
He helped her sit upright.
Serena stepped forward.
“She is fired.”
Victor ignored her.
His eyes moved toward the security camera above the staircase.
The red indicator was dark.
“Why is that camera off?”
“Maintenance.”
“Was maintenance scheduled?”
Marco checked his phone.
“No.”
Silence.
Then Victor noticed something beneath the console table.
A small black recorder.
Lily’s recorder.
The device she had secretly used to document Ethan’s breathing and medication.
Victor picked it up.
Serena’s face changed.
“Victor, that proves nothing.”
He pressed play.
Her own voice filled the foyer.
You think anyone will believe a cheap nanny over me?
Then Ethan’s scream.
Then Lily’s voice.
You’re breaking his arm.
Victor stopped the recording.
Nobody moved.
Finally he looked at Serena.
“No.”
His voice was quiet.
“I understand the first five minutes.”
He carried Ethan toward the door.
Serena’s voice followed him.
“Victor!”
He stopped.
“You do not give orders in this house anymore.”
Then he looked at Marco.
“Lock the gates.”
Serena went pale.
Victor disappeared into the rain with his injured son.
Lily remained on the floor.
Then a housemaid appeared halfway down the staircase.
Her eyes were filled with tears.
“Sir…”
Victor turned.
The woman swallowed.
“This wasn’t the first time.”
May you like
Victor stared at her.
And suddenly, the recording in his hand was no longer the worst evidence inside his mansion.
