Chapter 19 - THE COURTROOM
The trial began six months later.
News crews filled the courthouse steps. Reporters called it the Blackwood conspiracy, but Lily refused every interview. She was not interested in becoming famous for the worst day of Ethan’s life.
Inside the courtroom, she told the jury exactly what happened.
She described Serena dragging Ethan across the foyer. She described the threats, the missing medicine, and the nights she photographed bruises because no one answered her messages.
Serena stared at the table.
Damien stared at Lily with open hatred.
August Montigue smiled until prosecutors played Amelia’s voicemail.
Then the smile disappeared.
Rosa testified about the false medical reports. Marco explained the security sabotage. Celia Price admitted planting the phone and helping forge documents. Warren Price identified every shell company and every bribe.
Victor testified last.
The defense attorney tried to paint him as a violent criminal who had created a dangerous home.
Victor did not deny his past.
“I built power through fear,” he said. “That made it easy for people around me to believe fear was normal. My son paid for that mistake. So did Lily. I cannot change what I was. I can decide what I become next.”
The jury deliberated for two days.
August, Damien, Serena, Warren, and Celia were convicted on multiple charges. Serena received a reduced sentence because of her cooperation, but the judge rejected her request for house arrest.
“Privilege is not innocence,” the judge said.
Outside court, Lily expected relief.
Instead, she felt exhausted.
Victor found her on the courthouse steps with Ethan asleep against her shoulder.
“It’s finished,” he said.
Lily watched officers lead Serena into a transport van.
“No,” she replied. “Now we have to build whatever comes after.”
Victor looked at his son.
Then he handed Lily a key.
