Chapter 5 - The Person Behind the Betrayal

For several minutes, I couldn’t move.

I just stared at the picture on my phone.

A picture of Gwen.

Inside our house.

Taken months before I returned.

At first, I thought the worst part was seeing her suffering.

The thin face.

The exhausted eyes.

The fear she carried every day.

But now there was something else.

Someone had been watching her.

Someone had been documenting her life.

Someone had wanted evidence.

But why?

I looked at Marcus.

"Find out who took this."

He studied my expression.

"You think someone inside the house was helping Gwen?"

"I don't know what I think anymore."

And that was the truth.

For four years, I believed I understood my family.

I believed I knew who loved me.

Who supported me.

Who would stand beside me.

Now I realized I had been living inside a story someone else created.

Marcus picked up the folder.

"I'll trace the source."

"How long?"

"Give me twenty-four hours."

I nodded.

Before leaving, Marcus stopped me.

"David."

I looked at him.

"Be careful when you go back there."

I smiled slightly.

"I've been careful my entire life."

He shook his head.

"No. I mean with your wife."

I frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Marcus looked serious.

"Someone who has been controlled for years doesn't immediately feel safe when the person who can save them returns."

His words hit me harder than I expected.

Because he was right.

I wasn't just fighting Margaret and Paige.

I was fighting the damage they had done to Gwen.

The fear they had planted inside her.

The belief that nobody would protect her.

---

When I returned home that evening, everything looked normal.

Too normal.

Margaret was sitting in the living room drinking tea.

Paige was scrolling through her phone.

They looked like a family enjoying a peaceful evening.

But I knew better now.

Peace was sometimes just a mask.

"There you are," Margaret said.

I smiled.

"Yeah. Long day."

She studied me.

"Everything okay with the bank?"

I placed my keys on the table.

"Everything is fine."

Her shoulders relaxed.

She believed me.

Good.

"Actually," I added, "the military payout process is moving faster than expected."

Paige immediately looked up.

"Really?"

I nodded.

"Yes."

Margaret smiled.

"That's wonderful news."

I looked at both of them.

They weren't asking if I was okay.

They weren't asking about my years away.

They weren't asking how hard it was to come home.

They only cared about one thing.

Money.

I almost felt sorry for them.

Almost.

Then I remembered Gwen standing at the sink.

I remembered the fear in her eyes.

And sympathy disappeared.

---

Later that night, I found Gwen sitting alone outside.

She was wrapped in a blanket.

Looking at the stars.

I sat beside her.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Then she said:

"I thought you hated me."

I turned toward her.

"What?"

"When you saw me yesterday... I thought you would think I was weak."

My chest tightened.

"Gwen."

"I wasn't the person you left behind."

She looked down.

"I couldn't protect our home. I couldn't protect your money. I couldn't even protect myself."

I reached for her hand.

"Listen to me."

She looked at me.

"You survived."

A tear rolled down her cheek.

"That doesn't feel like surviving."

"It is."

I held her hand.

"Someone tried to break you. They tried to convince you that you were powerless."

I paused.

"But they failed."

She looked at me.

"How?"

"Because you're still here."

For the first time, she smiled.

A small smile.

But a real one.

Then her expression changed.

"David."

"What?"

"There is something I never told you."

I waited.

"When your mother moved in, she wasn't the only person involved."

My body became tense.

"Who else?"

Gwen hesitated.

"I don't know his name."

"His?"

She nodded.

"There was a man who came to the house."

"What kind of man?"

"Someone who handled financial paperwork."

My mind immediately connected the pieces.

"An accountant?"

"Maybe."

"What did he do?"

She looked frightened.

"He helped Margaret change ownership documents."

I felt my heart sink.

"Ownership documents?"

Gwen nodded.

"They wanted control of everything."

I stood up.

"What documents?"

"I don't know exactly."

"Where are they?"

She pointed toward the house.

"In the old office."

I looked at the mansion.

The room nobody used.

The room Margaret always kept locked.

A place I had never thought about before.

Until now.

---

That night, after everyone went to sleep, I walked through the hallway.

Quietly.

Carefully.

The same way I entered the house when I came home.

Except this time, I wasn't searching for answers.

I was collecting them.

I reached the office door.

Locked.

I smiled.

Margaret always underestimated one thing about me.

Military training.

Locks were not obstacles.

They were invitations.

A few minutes later, the door opened.

Inside was darkness.

I turned on my flashlight.

The room was filled with files.

Boxes.

Documents.

I started searching.

At first, nothing.

Then I found a hidden drawer.

Inside were folders.

My name was written on one.

I opened it.

And what I saw made my hands freeze.

Property transfers.

Financial agreements.

Insurance papers.

And a document dated two years earlier.

A document that had my signature.

Except...

I never signed it.

Someone had forged my name.

I kept searching.

Then I found something worse.

A recording.

A small digital device.

I pressed play.

Margaret's voice filled the room.

"If David doesn't come back, everything will be ours."

My breathing stopped.

Then Paige's voice answered:

"What about Gwen?"

Margaret laughed.

"Gwen won't do anything. She knows nobody will believe her."

I felt my blood run cold.

Then Margaret said something that changed everything.

"By the time David returns, there won't be anything left for him to take back."

I turned off the recording.

My hands were shaking.

Not from anger.

From realization.

This wasn't an accident.

This wasn't greed.

This was a plan.

A plan to erase me.

To take my life.

My home.

My money.

My wife.

Everything.

I put the recording into my pocket.

Then I heard something.

A noise outside the office.

Someone was awake.

Someone knew I was there.

I turned off the flashlight.

The door handle slowly moved.

Someone was trying to open the office door.

I stood in the darkness.

Waiting.

The handle stopped.

Then a whisper came from the other side.

"David?"

It was Gwen.

I opened the door.

She looked terrified.

"What are you doing here?"

I looked at her.

And I knew something was wrong.

Because Gwen wasn't afraid of finding me in the office.

She was afraid because she knew something else.

Something she hadn't told me.

"What is it?" I asked.

Her face turned pale.

"David..."

She whispered:

"The person who helped my mother isn't who you think."

I stared at her.

"Who is it?"

She looked behind her.

Making sure nobody was listening.

Then she said the name.

May you like

And when I heard it...

I realized the betrayal went deeper than I ever imagined.
