Chapter 12 - Reclaiming the Docks and Launching the Iron Phoenix

With the Davenports permanently erased from the maritime industry, Tobias and I turned our entire focus toward the total restoration of Sterling Marine Works.

Using the forty million dollars from our father’s Vanguard Phoenix Trust, combined with twenty-five million dollars in seized Davenport restitution funds, we initiated the largest shipyard modernization project in Georgia history.

We recalled all four hundred laid-off union shipbuilders, doubled their medical benefits, and broke ground on a cutting-edge green-energy commercial shipbuilding dock.

One year after the trial, on a crisp, radiant morning in late October, the Savannah Harbor was alive with thousands of cheering workers, city officials, and international maritime dignitaries.

Standing in the primary drydock was the Iron Phoenix—a massive, 800-foot state-of-the-art hybrid-electric container vessel, gleaming in pristine navy blue and gold paint.

Tobias and I stood on the christening platform forty feet above the water.

Tobias was dressed in a tailored navy captain’s blazer, standing tall, strong, and proud on his own two feet beneath the bright autumn sun.

I wore a magnificent emerald-green silk coat, my dark hair flowing in the fresh ocean breeze, holding the ceremonial bottle of champagne.

Richard Thorpe stepped up to the microphone, looking out over the sea of four thousand cheering shipyard workers and their families.

“Thirty years ago,” Thorpe announced, his voice booming across the harbor, “Arthur Sterling dreamed of building vessels that would carry American honor across the seven seas. Today, through the unyielding courage, brilliance, and unbreakable spirit of his children—Rosalind and Tobias Sterling—that dream is realized!”

The crowd erupted into a deafening roar of horns, cheers, and applause.

I stepped forward to the railing, looking down at the thousands of hardworking men and women who had stood by our family through the darkest storm.

I raised the champagne bottle high.

“For Arthur and Eleanor Sterling!” I cried, my voice ringing out with radiant, triumphant power. “May the Iron Phoenix sail with honor, conquer every storm, and stand forever as a symbol that truth and justice can never be drowned!”

SMASH!

The champagne bottle shattered against the reinforced steel bow of the ship in a glorious explosion of foam and crystal.

The massive drydock gates opened, allowing the rushing blue waters of the Atlantic to flood the basin, lifting the mighty vessel into the sea as the ship’s horn sounded three deep, triumphant blasts that echoed across the entire coastline.

Tobias wrapped his arm around my shoulders, and together we watched our parents’ legacy conquer the ocean once again.
