Chapter 1

My seven-year-old niece was crying for her mother at her father’s wedding when he slapped her in front of everyone—and seconds later, I knocked him to the floor and told her the secret he had buried for months.
The wedding was taking place at a beautiful country club outside Dallas.
My brother-in-law, Ryan, was marrying Vanessa only eight months after everyone had been told my sister Emily was dead.
Their daughter, Lily, stood beside the wedding party looking completely lost.
She wasn’t smiling.
She kept staring at the empty chair where her mother should have been.
Vanessa finally bent down and hissed, “Stop ruining my wedding with that face.”
Lily’s chin started trembling.
“I want my mommy.”
Ryan heard her.
His expression changed immediately.
“Lily, enough.”
“But Daddy, I miss her.”
Guests turned toward them.
Vanessa looked embarrassed.
Ryan grabbed Lily by the arm and whispered, “You’re going to behave today.”
Lily pulled away.
“I don’t want her to be my new mommy!”
The entire reception went quiet.
Then Ryan slapped her across the cheek.
Lily stumbled backward and burst into tears.
“I WANT MY MOM!”
That was the moment I came through the ballroom doors.
I had been driving for hours because of one phone call Ryan never knew I received.
I saw Lily holding her cheek.
Something inside me snapped.
I ran straight toward Ryan and kicked him hard enough to knock him onto the dance floor.
People screamed.
Vanessa shouted, “CALL SECURITY!”
I didn’t even look at her.
I dropped to my knees and pulled Lily into my arms.
She was shaking so badly she could barely speak.
“Uncle James… Daddy says Mommy is gone.”
I held her face gently.
“No, sweetheart.”
Ryan suddenly went pale.
“James, don’t.”
Lily stared at me through her tears.
I said the words Ryan had spent months making sure she never heard.
“Your mother is still alive.”
Lily stopped crying.
Behind me, Vanessa dropped her champagne glass.
Ryan scrambled to his feet.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about!”
But then every face in the ballroom turned toward the entrance.
A woman was standing there gripping the doorframe.
May you like
Thin, trembling, and staring directly at Lily.
And when Lily whispered, “Mommy?” Ryan started backing away.
