Chapter 4 - The Unraveling

The sirens grew louder, their red and blue lights flashing against the high arched windows of the Grand Regency Ballroom.
Vanessa looked at the flashing lights, then down at her diamond engagement ring, and finally at Ryan, whose forehead was now covered in a slick sheen of sweat.
"We're done," Vanessa whispered, her voice trembling.
"Vanessa, wait—" Ryan reached for her hand, but she violently yanked her arm back.
"Don't touch me!" she screamed, tears of humiliation ruining her bridal makeup. "You lied to me! You told me her family was dead! You used me to clean up your public image!"
Vanessa grabbed the sides of her heavy silk gown, unhooked her veil, tore it off her head, and threw it directly into Ryan’s face before running off the stage down the side exit.
The ballroom descended into utter bedlam. Wedding guests began scrambling for the exits, not wanting to be caught in the middle of a high-profile criminal arrest. Ryan’s high-society friends quickly distanced themselves, slipping out through the patio doors.
The grand double doors of the ballroom swung open once more.
Four uniformed officers from the city police department, accompanied by two federal agents in dark suits, marched down the central aisle. At the head of the squad was Detective Marcus Vance—my cousin and a senior investigator with the financial crimes division.
"Ryan Sterling?" Detective Vance called out, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his utility belt.
Ryan stood paralyzed on the stage, watching the officers approach. "Marcus... listen to me, this is a family misunderstanding—"
"Save it for the magistrate, Ryan," Detective Vance interrupted flatly. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, forgery, false imprisonment, and felony child abuse."
"Child abuse?!" Ryan sputtered. "I barely touched her! She was having a tantrum!"
"There are three hundred witnesses in this room, Ryan," I noted coldly, pointing up to the venue's high-definition security cameras mounted on the ceiling. "And four thousand frames of forty-k video footage showing you striking a seven-year-old child across the face."
The lead officer stepped up onto the stage, grabbing Ryan’s arm and twisting it behind his back. The sharp CLICK-CLICK of the steel handcuffs echoed across the emptying ballroom.
Lily buried her face deeper into Emily’s shoulder, covering her ears. Emily held her close, whispering gentle words of comfort, shielding her daughter from the sight of her father being led away in chains.

As the officers marched Ryan down the aisle, he turned his head toward me, his face contorted in pure, unadulterated venom. "You ruined me, James! You ruined everything!"
"You ruined yourself the moment you touched that little girl," I replied softly as he was shoved through the heavy doors into the waiting police cruiser outside.
