Chapter 5 - The Safe Haven

By midnight, the chaotic noise of the ballroom was replaced by the warm, quiet comfort of my suburban home.
My wife, Sarah—who had been coordinating with us from home all evening—had prepared the guest bedroom upstairs for Emily and Lily. Soft yellow nightlights illuminated the hallway, and the smell of hot chamomile tea and fresh-baked cookies filled the kitchen.
Upstairs, Lily was fast asleep in the wide canopy bed, clutching a stuffed bear Sarah had placed on her pillow. For the first time in three years, her breathing was slow, peaceful, and deep.
Emily sat on the edge of the bed, softly stroking her daughter’s hair. She looked exhausted, the dark circles under her eyes showing the immense toll three years of isolation and fear had taken on her spirit.
I knocked gently on the open bedroom door, holding two mugs of tea.
"Hey," I whispered.
Emily looked up, offering a tired, beautiful smile. "Hey, James."
I walked in, handing her a mug, and sat in the armchair beside the bed. "How is she doing?"
"She fell asleep thirty seconds after her head hit the pillow," Emily whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "She held my thumb the entire time. She was so afraid she’d wake up and find out I was just a dream."
"She’s safe now, Emily," I assured her gently. "The judge signed the emergency temporary custody and protective order two hours ago. Ryan is being held without bail at the county facility pending his arraignment on Monday."
Emily took a slow sip of tea, tears silently slipping down her cheeks. "When they locked me in that room three years ago, James... I thought I would die there. They gave me pills that made my mind foggy. They told me Lily had forgotten who I was. They told me no one was looking for me."
"I never stopped looking, Emily," I said softly. "My late wife—your sister—would have burned the world down to find you. I promised her before she passed that I would always protect her family."

Emily reached across the small gap between us, gripping my hand tightly. "Thank you, James. You saved my life. You saved my daughter."
"We’re just getting started," I said, my voice hardening into resolve. "On Monday, we take back everything he stole from you."
