Chapter 8 - The Final Reckoning

While Adrian found peace in Park Slope, the remnants of the Falcone syndicate were undergoing a desperate, chaotic collapse.

Dominic Falcone’s younger brother, Marco Falcone, had taken control of the remaining street crews in Brooklyn. Ruthless, impulsive, and furious over his brother's death, Marco realized he couldn't defeat Adrian in a direct war.

Instead, he hired an informant to trace Adrian’s daily movements.

On a rainy Tuesday night in November, Marco received a photograph taken by a long-lens camera: Adrian Moretti walking out of a Park Slope brownstone, holding a little girl on his shoulders while a young woman laughed beside him.

"So..." Marco sneered, staring at the photograph under the flickering light of his hideout. "The great Moretti has a secret family. He killed my brother for a child... let’s see how he handles losing another one."

That night, as storm clouds rolled over New York, two black sedans pulled up to the corner of the tree-lined street in Park Slope.

Inside the brownstone, Hannah was putting Ellie to bed, while Adrian stood in the kitchen downstairs, brewing a fresh pot of chamomile tea.

Suddenly, the house’s internal alarm chimed twice—a quiet warning tone indicating that the exterior motion sensors in the rear garden had been triggered.

Adrian’s body instantly shifted into survival mode.

He pulled a silenced hand-gun from a hidden compartment under the kitchen counter and tapped his ear piece, connecting directly to Mateo’s security car parked down the block.

"Mateo," Adrian whispered coldly. "We have perimeter breaches in the garden."

"Boss!" Mateo’s voice came through the ear piece, distorted by static. "We’re cut off! Two vehicles just rammed our security team at the corner—they’re blocking the street!"

GLASS SHATTERED IN THE DINING ROOM.

Three armed men in black masks kicked through the rear French doors, guns raised.

Adrian didn't hesitate. He stepped out of the kitchen, firing three suppressed shots with lethal precision. Two of the intruders collapsed onto the hardwood floor instantly. The third man dove behind the dining table, blind-firing an automatic machine pistol into the hallway.

Bullets tore through the plaster walls, shattering framed pictures and vase glass.

Upstairs, Hannah screamed as she heard the gunfire.

"Hannah!" Adrian roared, his voice echoing above the deafening noise of the gunshots. "Stay in the panic room! Lock the door!"

Adrian moved through the dark hallway like a shadow. He flushed out the third attacker, neutralizing him before sprinting up the stairs two at a time.

At the top of the landing, Marco Falcone stepped out of the master bedroom, holding a high-caliber revolver, his face twisted in a manic sneer.

"Moretti!" Marco shrieked, pulling the trigger.

The bullet grazed Adrian’s left shoulder, tearing through his wool coat and drawing a sharp line of hot blood.

Adrian didn't even flinch.

He closed the distance between them in half a second, grabbing Marco’s wrist, twisting it until the bones cracked, and slamming the mobster’s face into the heavy oak banister.

The revolver clattered down the stairs.

Adrian pinned Marco against the wall, his hand crushed against Marco’s throat, his grey eyes burning with an absolute, terrifying dark fury.

"You came into my house," Adrian growled, his voice vibrating with lethal force. "You brought violence near my family."

"Kill me then!" Marco choked out, gasping for air. "Kill me like you killed my brother!"

Adrian looked at the dark hallway. He heard the quiet, frightened whimpers of little Ellie hiding behind the reinforced door of the nursery panic room.

He remembered the promise he had made to himself in the hospital bed four months ago. He remembered the four-dollar sacrifice of an innocent child.

Adrian lowered his gun.

"No," Adrian said coldly. "Death is too easy for you, Marco."

Mateo and six Moretti security officers burst through the front door, weapons drawn, sweeping the stairs.

"Take him," Adrian ordered, throwing Marco down the stairs into Mateo’s hands. "Hand him over to the federal prosecutor's office, along with the complete ledger of the Falcone syndicate's human trafficking records. Let him spend the rest of his life in a federal prison."

Mateo dragged the screaming mobster away.

Adrian stood on the landing, blood dripping from his left shoulder onto his grey sweater.

The heavy door of the nursery opened slowly.

Hannah stepped out, her face pale, holding Ellie tightly against her chest.

When Ellie saw the blood on Adrian’s arm, her eyes filled with big, heavy tears. She pulled away from her mother, ran across the hallway, and wrapped her small arms around Adrian’s waist.

"Quiet man!" Ellie cried, burying her face in his coat. "Are you hurted?"

May you like

Adrian dropped his weapon onto a side table, sank onto his knees, and wrapped his arms around the little girl and her mother, pulling them both into a tight, protective embrace.

"I’m fine, little one," Adrian whispered, kissing the top of Ellie’s curly head as tears finally spilled freely down his face. "I’m safe. We’re all safe now."
