Chapter 21 - Sophie Asked About Amanda

The question came at breakfast.
No crisis.
No courtroom.
No warning.
Sophie was eating pancakes when she asked:
“Was Amanda bad?”
Daniel dropped his fork.
Rachel looked at him.
Sophie noticed.
“That’s a yes?”
Daniel recovered.
“Why are you asking?”
“A kid at school said she hit me.”
Rachel became still.
“Who?”
“Emma.”
“How does Emma know?”
“Her mom saw something online.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Of course.
Victor’s trial remained searchable.
Allison’s testimony.
The canceled wedding.
Sophie’s name had been protected where possible, but not every old report was perfect.
Rachel pulled her chair closer.
“What do you remember?”
Sophie shrugged.
“A white dress.”
“Anything else?”
“You and Dad told me she hurt me.”
“Yes.”
“Did she?”
Daniel answered.
“Yes.”
“How?”
Rachel and Daniel had discussed this with Sophie’s therapist months earlier.
Truth in pieces.
Never lies.
Never unnecessary detail.
Daniel said:
“She slapped you.”
Sophie’s expression changed.
“My face?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Daniel looked at Rachel.
Rachel nodded.
“You found the pendant.”
Sophie touched Rachel’s necklace.
“This?”
“Yes.”
“And she wanted it?”
“Very badly.”
“Why?”
“Because there was information hidden inside it that could prove some adults were doing dangerous things.”
Sophie processed that.
“Did I know?”
“No.”
“So why did she hit me?”
Daniel’s throat tightened.
“Because she was scared.”
Sophie frowned.
“That’s dumb.”
“Yes.”
“Was Amanda bad?”
There it was again.
Rachel answered this time.
“She did bad things.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
“I know.”
Rachel smiled sadly.
“She also had bad things done to her.”
Sophie stared.
“By Victor?”
“Yes.”
“Does that make hitting me okay?”
“No.”
Immediate.
Sophie nodded.
That mattered.
Daniel added:
“Her real name is Allison.”
“What?”
“Amanda Hale was an identity someone made her use.”
“That’s confusing.”
“Extremely.”
“Can I call her Allison?”
“Yes.”
“Do you hate her?”
Daniel looked at his daughter.
“I was very angry with her.”
“Now?”
“I don’t want her in our family.”
Sophie waited.
“But I don’t spend every day hating her.”
Rachel nodded.
“That’s how I feel too.”
Sophie ate another bite.
Then asked:
“Did she love Dad?”
Daniel nearly choked.
Rachel laughed despite herself.
“What?”
Sophie pointed.
“You were gonna marry her.”
Daniel looked defeated.
“I thought I loved her.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
Rachel covered her mouth.
Daniel sighed.
“I think part of her loved me.”
Sophie nodded.
“And she still lied?”
“Yes.”
“That’s weird.”
“Yes.”
She thought longer.
“Can somebody love you and still not be safe?”
Daniel looked at Rachel.
Rachel’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
Sophie accepted that faster than either adult ever had.
Then she pointed to the pendant.
“Can I see inside?”
Rachel opened it.
Her younger photograph.
No microcard.
No evidence.
Only empty space behind the backing now.
Sophie looked disappointed.
“That’s it?”
Rachel laughed.
“That’s it.”
“Dad looks scared when he sees it.”
Daniel protested.
“I do not.”
“You do.”
Rachel nodded.
“He does.”
Sophie closed the pendant.
Then handed it back.
“I like my flower basket better.”
Daniel smiled.
So did Rachel.
The truth had reached Sophie.
Not all at once.
Not as a weapon.
Not as a family legend she had to carry.
Just enough.

And after breakfast she went to school worried mostly about whether Emma would trade her a glitter pen.
That was exactly how Rachel wanted it.
