Chapter 9 - My Wife Was Alive

Cedar Ridge administrators initially refused entry.
A federal warrant changed that.
Daniel waited in the hallway while medical staff evaluated Rachel.
He had imagined finding her so many times during the previous weeks that reality felt less believable.
Then Ruiz approached.
“She’s here.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
“Can I see her?”
“She’s confused.”
“I don’t care.”
“They do.”
He looked at Ruiz.
She softened.
“Give the doctors ten minutes.”
Ten minutes later Daniel stood at the glass.
Rachel opened her eyes.
Touched the window.
And eventually collapsed into his arms.
After the first reunion, doctors separated them again.
Rachel needed stabilization.
Medication in her system included sedatives and memory-impairing drugs.
Not enough to erase identity permanently.
Enough to worsen her traumatic brain injury.
Daniel sat with neurologist Dr. Laura Kim.
“Will she remember everything?”
“Maybe not.”
“Will she recover?”
“Likely significantly.”
“What does significantly mean?”
“It means don’t measure recovery against the person she was the morning before the crash.”
That hurt.
Daniel nodded.
Rachel had lost seventeen months.
No medical outcome could return them.
Then came Sophie.
Doctors advised gradual contact.
Daniel showed Rachel recent videos first.
Sophie laughing.
Sophie walking.
Sophie saying “Daddy.”
Rachel watched each several times.
“She got teeth.”
Daniel laughed through tears.
“Lots.”
“She walks.”
“Runs.”
Rachel covered her mouth.
“I missed it.”
Daniel had no comforting answer.
“Yes.”
Rachel cried.
“I missed everything.”
“Not everything.”
He sat beside her.
“You still have everything after today.”
She looked at him.
Then asked the question Daniel feared.
“Are you married?”
“No.”
“Amanda?”
“No.”
“You were going to.”
“Yes.”
Rachel nodded.
She looked hurt.
Then ashamed of looking hurt.
Daniel understood.
“You were dead.”
“I know.”
“I thought.”
“I know.”
Neither needed more.
Two days later Sophie entered.
Rebecca held her hand.
Rachel sat on the bed.
Her whole body trembled.
Sophie stared.
She looked at Daniel.
Then at the pendant.
Then back to Rachel.
“Mommy.”
Rachel broke instantly.
She opened her arms but did not move toward Sophie.
The choice remained with the child.
Sophie took three small steps.
Then stopped.
Rachel whispered,
“Hi, baby.”
Sophie frowned.
Touched Rachel’s face.
Then Rachel’s hair.
“Mommy sleep.”
Daniel covered his mouth.
Sophie remembered the photographs Amanda had shown her.
Rachel laughed through tears.
“No more sleep.”
Sophie climbed into her lap.
Rachel held her.
Daniel turned toward the window because some moments were too private even when they belonged to him too.
Rebecca cried openly.
Rachel whispered into Sophie’s hair,
“I’m sorry.”
Sophie did not understand apologies for seventeen lost months.
She touched Rachel’s hospital bracelet.
“Pretty.”
Rachel laughed.
That was enough.
After the reunion Rachel slept for four hours.
Daniel stayed.
When she woke, she asked about the pendant.
He showed her the micro card.
“You saved it.”
“Sophie did.”
Rachel smiled faintly.
“She always grabbed shiny things.”
“You remember?”
“Some.”
Then Rachel’s expression darkened.
“There’s more on it.”
“We found the ledger.”
“No.”
She looked at Daniel.
“The ledger is the first layer.”
“What else?”
“A file called Orchard.”
Daniel searched the copied data.
Hidden encrypted archive.
Ruiz had not opened it yet.
Rachel remembered the password.
“Sophie’s birth weight.”
Daniel typed.
Seven pounds, three ounces.
The archive opened.
Inside were patient identities.
Payment records.
Photographs.
And a video.
Victor Hale speaking with Amanda.
Date:
Three days before Rachel’s crash.
Victor said,
“If Rachel won’t stop, Anna Reed begins Friday.”
Amanda’s voice:
“And the body?”
Victor:
“Melissa is already handled.”
Daniel went cold.
Rachel whispered,
“He killed her.”
The recording continued.
Amanda asked,
“You said she overdosed.”
Victor smiled.
“Then that’s what happened.”
Amanda stared at him.
For the first time the video captured genuine horror.
“You killed Melissa.”
Victor leaned toward her.
“You became my daughter because I protected you. Don’t suddenly develop morality.”
Daniel looked at Amanda’s frozen image.
Rachel said quietly,
“She was afraid of him.”
“Yes.”
“But she still helped.”
“Yes.”
Rachel’s eyes filled.
“Both can be true.”
Daniel nodded.
He was learning that too often.
Then the recording reached its final seconds.
Victor said,
“Once Rachel disappears, Daniel will eventually need someone.”
Amanda looked up.
Victor smiled.
“You already know enough about his life to become exactly what he needs.”
May you like
Daniel stopped the video.
The courtship had been planned before Rachel was even removed.
