Chapter 11 - THE SHADOW BROTHER

The following days were a blur of motion and fear.
Detective Marquez issued a warrant for Kael’s arrest. Police fanned out across the city—checking known associates, tracking financial trails, watching locations Kael might frequent. But he had vanished completely. No credit card use. No phone calls. No sightings. It was as though he had dissolved back into the darkness from which he came.
Liam meanwhile remained under house arrest, calm and composed, granting interviews to carefully selected journalists claiming he was the victim of a smear campaign. He smiled in photographs. He spoke of friendship and betrayal. And every time I saw his face, I remembered that there was another one just like it roaming free, hunting my son.
I hired additional security. Two armed guards patrolling the grounds at all hours. Bulletproof film on every window. High, reinforced fencing along the property line. Ethan never stepped outside without an escort. I slept on a cot across his doorway every night, a loaded firearm within reach.
But fear began to take its toll. Ethan grew quieter. More watchful. He stopped playing outside. He drew pictures of eyes in the darkness and locked them in a desk drawer. He still sat with me at the piano, but his melody wavered now, filled with pauses where he would glance toward the window.
One afternoon after school, he came home and walked silently into the study. He set his backpack on the floor and looked up at me.
“Daddy,” he said. “Why does he look like Mr. Liam?”
I paused in the doorway. “Who?”
“The man in the tree.” Ethan frowned, struggling to put thoughts into words. “He looks almost exactly like Mr. Liam. But his eyes are different. Colder. And when he smiles… it doesn’t reach his face. It’s just teeth.”
I knelt so we were eye level. “They are brothers. Twins. They look alike, but they are very different men. One is in jail where he belongs. The other… we are trying to find him. Until we do, we stay safe inside. Together.”
Ethan considered this gravely. “If they are twins… how do you tell which one is bad?”
My heart clenched. “The bad ones don’t love you. They don’t care if you are safe or happy. They only care about themselves. That is how you know.”
Ethan nodded slowly. “Okay. So I will always know. Because you love me. And he doesn’t.”
“Exactly.” I pulled him into a hug. “You are the smartest boy in the whole world.”
But inside, my mind was racing. If they looked identical, how would anyone know which one was free? Liam could swap places with Kael at any moment. Remove the monitor. Walk free while his brother sat imprisoned in his home. It was the perfect crime. And Liam was clever enough to think of it.
That evening, Marcus arrived with new information. He sat at the kitchen table, his face grim.
“Marquez got a tip,” he said quietly. “Kael was spotted at a motel on the edge of the city three nights ago. But by the time police arrived, he was gone. Left behind a receipt for gas and supplies. And this.”
Marcus slid a folded scrap of paper across the table. Written in rough, jagged handwriting:
*TELL LIAM I AM READY. TELL HIM THE WAITING IS OVER.*
I stared at the words. “Kael is waiting for orders. Or waiting for Liam to join him.”
“Or both.” Marcus leaned forward. “Adrian, there’s something worse. The authorities confirmed yesterday that Liam’s ankle monitor was tampered with. Signal went dead for approximately four hours two nights ago. They don’t know where he was.”
My blood ran cold. “He was here. Wasn’t he?”
“Possibly. Or Kael removed the monitor and wore it while Liam walked free. We don’t know. But we do know this: the brothers are communicating. And they are planning something big.”
I stood and walked to the window. Dusk was falling. The security lights had flickered on, casting long shadows across the lawn. Somewhere out there, one or both of them could be watching.
“They’re going to make a move before the trial,” I said. “They know the evidence is overwhelming. Liam is facing life in prison. He has nothing to lose. And Kael… he’ll follow wherever Liam leads.”
“Which means we have to move first,” Marcus said. “We lure them out. We set a trap. And we catch both of them together.”
We spent the next two days planning. We planted false information—carefully leaking word that I would be traveling alone with Ethan to a cabin hours away, that security would be light, that the USB drive and all copies would be with me. A tempting target. The perfect place to end everything quietly.
We arranged for a full tactical team to position themselves secretly around the property and along the route. Every move watched. Every exit covered. If Liam and Kael took the bait, they would walk straight into a cage.
Detective Marquez called the plan reckless.
“They are dangerous, Adrian. Kael has killed before—allegations never proven but strongly suspected. If you lure them in, Ethan could be in the crossfire.”
“Ethan stays here,” I told her. “Protected inside a safe room with three guards. I’ll be the bait. I’ll be the one they come for.”
“And if they figure out it’s a trap?”
“Then we end it tonight. Whatever happens, I cannot live like this forever. Looking over my shoulder. Hiding in my own home. Watching my son grow afraid of shadows. Better to face them both now than spend the rest of our lives running.”
Marquez was silent for a long moment. Then she sighed. “Midnight tomorrow. We’ll be ready. But Adrian… stay safe. Ethan needs his father.”
That night, I sat beside Ethan’s bed and told him none of this. I simply kissed his forehead, smoothed his hair, and held his hand while he drifted off. I memorized every line of his face. Every eyelash. The way his mouth curved even in sleep.
If anything went wrong… if Liam and Kael outsmarted us… I needed this memory to carry me through.
Ethan stirred and opened his eyes sleepily. “Daddy?”
“I’m here.”
“Don’t go far away,” he whispered. “Stay where I can find you.”
“I promise,” I said, my voice thick. “I will never be farther away than the next room. You will always be able to find me.”
He smiled, closed his eyes, and slept.
I stood and walked out into the hallway. Marcus waited near the stairs. He looked at me and nodded once.
Everything was in place.

Tomorrow night. Midnight. The trap would spring. Two brothers. One final confrontation. And the truth would finally, once and for all, be dragged into the light.
