Chapter 13 - A SECRET FROM THE PAST

The tactical teams swept the woods for hours. They found footprints, broken branches, discarded water bottles—but no Liam. No Kael. They had vanished as completely as smoke.
Marquez stood with me near the porch long after the search was called off. She looked tired, her uniform smudged, her expression grim.
“They had a vehicle waiting,” she said. “A fast motorcycle. Tracks lead to the main road. By now, they could be anywhere.”
“They work perfectly together,” I said hollowly. “One plans. One executes. And they are identical enough to confuse every witness and every investigator. How do you catch two men who can swap identities whenever they choose?”
“We keep working,” she said. “We find Kael first. He has no resources, no reputation, no patience. Liam is the brains—but Kael is the weakness. Push Kael hard enough and he will crack. He will betray Liam to save himself. Brothers or not.”
I hoped she was right. But as I walked back inside the house, the silence felt heavier than before.
The next morning, I returned to Claire’s files. If Liam and Kael shared a past, then Claire must have learned more than just their names. There had to be something about where they came from. How they reunited. What bound them so fiercely together—and what might eventually tear them apart.
I dug deeper into the medical and personal folders. Cross-referenced dates. Read every note in her handwriting.
And then I found it. Buried in a folder marked CLAIRE’S CHILDHOOD — RESEARCHED LATE. A small envelope tucked behind a stack of papers. Sealed. Addressed to me.
I broke the wax seal carefully. Inside was a letter in Claire’s handwriting, written in a shaky hand that suggested she had been very weak when she penned it.
*My dearest Adrian,*
*If you are reading this, it means the twins have shown themselves. It means Liam has brought Kael out of the shadows. I am so sorry. I hoped you would never need to know this part.*
*Before Liam was adopted, before he was given his name and fortune… he and Kael belonged to my family. Their mother was my grandmother’s younger sister. She gave birth to them when she was barely eighteen. Ashamed and afraid, she gave them both up. My grandmother never spoke of it. I found the documents by accident while researching our family tree years ago.*
*Liam and Kael are not merely connected to us, Adrian. They are blood relatives. Distant, yes—but family. Liam learned the truth shortly before we married. He tracked down his own records. He discovered that our families were connected. And somewhere in that terrible mind of his… he convinced himself that what belonged to me, belonged to him too. That he was entitled to a share of everything my family built. Including me. Including Ethan.*
The words blurred before my eyes.
They were family. Distant cousins. Liam had known this all along. He hadn’t just been a greedy business partner. He had believed himself entitled to everything I had. Every success. Every happiness. Every moment of peace. Because he thought blood gave him the right to take it.
Claire’s letter continued:
*Kael knows nothing of this. Liam told him only that they had been robbed of what was theirs. He fed Kael a story of injustice and stolen inheritance. He uses Kael’s anger and loyalty to do his bidding. If you ever face them together… remember this. Liam knows the truth. Kael does not. Tell Kael what Liam has hidden from him. Show him the records. Tell him that Liam has been using him as a weapon while keeping every reward for himself.*
*Blood is strong, Adrian. But betrayal runs deeper. If you can turn the brother against the brother… you defeat them both without striking a single blow.*
I set the letter down slowly.
This was it. The weakness. The crack in their bond. Liam had built an empire of lies around Kael. He had told him they were wrongfully deprived. That they were equals. That they would share everything.
But the truth was different. Liam knew exactly who they were. He knew the fortune he had been given while Kael received nothing. And he had kept that knowledge hidden, using Kael’s rage to fuel his own revenge.
If I could make Kael understand… everything would unravel.
That evening, I told Marcus what I had discovered. He sat in silence, reading the letter twice, then leaned back with a long exhale.
“Claire was brilliant,” he said quietly. “She didn’t just gather evidence. She understood people. She understood that the most dangerous weapon against two brothers bound by lies… was the truth.”
“It’s a risk,” I said. “If I approach Kael alone, Liam could be there waiting. It could be a trap.”
“Which is why we don’t approach him alone,” Marcus said. “We find where they are hiding. We leak the truth where only Kael will see it. We let him come to us. Angry. Confused. Demanding answers from the brother who betrayed him.”
“And if he still chooses Liam?”
Marcus looked at me, his eyes steady.
“Then we fight. But Adrian… from everything Claire wrote, everything the records show… Kael has spent his entire life believing in a lie Liam told him. Imagine the rage when he realizes his own brother has been using him as a tool. He won’t just turn on Liam. He will destroy him.”
We spent the next days preparing. I made copies of Claire’s family records. I wrote out the truth clearly, calmly—no threats, no manipulation, just facts. Birth records showing their adoption. Bank records showing Liam’s wealth while Kael lived in poverty. Proof that Liam had known their true origins for years and said nothing.
We didn’t know where they were. But we knew they were watching. They wanted to know what we knew. So we gave them exactly that.
We leaked the documents anonymously to every source Liam monitored. We posted the truth where Liam would be certain to find it. And then we waited.
Two nights later, my phone rang at 3:17 AM.
No voice on the other end. Only heavy, ragged breathing. And then, rough and shaking—Kael’s voice.

“Is it true?” he asked. Every word sounded torn from him. “Tell me the truth. Or I come to you and take it.”
