Chapter 4 - The Shadow Protocol

Night descended over the Port of Chicago like a wet wool blanket. Fog rolled off the dark waters of Lake Michigan, cloaking the rows of massive shipping containers in an eerie gray haze.
Inside a dark control trailer overlooking Pier 42, Gabriel stood beside Marco, watching thermal camera feeds displayed on high-definition screens.
Mia sat in the passenger seat of Gabriel’s armored SUV parked inside the lower level of the trailer, wearing a bulletproof vest under her coat and monitoring the electronic data feeds. Gabriel had refused to leave her at the penthouse, insisting that her ability to read the live system logs was critical to executing the operation.
“Vance took the bait,” Mia’s voice came through Gabriel’s earpiece, crisp and calm. “He logged into the Port authority terminal ten minutes ago and authorized a heavy freight transfer for Vault 7. Sterling’s primary strike team just breached the perimeter fence near the north gate.”
“Copy that,” Marco said into his radio. “Teams one and two, hold your fire until the entire unit is inside the kill zone.”
On the thermal screen, ten dark figures moved silently between the steel containers, moving toward Vault 7—a massive concrete warehouse holding high-value customs cargo.
Gabriel leaned over the comms console. “Is Sterling with them?”
“Scanning the vehicle signatures at the outer gate,” Mia replied, her voice steady despite the sound of approaching engines outside. “Yes. A dark silver sedan just pulled up behind the warehouse. Sterling is inside.”
Gabriel’s eyes burned with cold satisfaction. He clicked his radio. “Spring the trap.”
Instantly, floodlights shattered the darkness around Pier 42, illuminating the fog in brilliant white rays. Sirens blared across the docks as heavy steel gates slammed down, locking Sterling’s mercenaries inside the container alley.
Gunfire erupted below—a deafening chorus of automatic rifles echoing off the metal walls.
Inside the SUV, Mia braced herself as the vibrations of heavy gunfire rattled the vehicle. She kept her eyes glued to her laptop, watching the port’s security grid. Suddenly, a red warning icon flashed on her screen.
“Gabriel!” Mia shouted into her comms. “Sterling’s team had a secondary team! They’re overriding the power grid from the dock master's tower—they’re cutting the floodlights!”
Before Gabriel could answer, the entire pier plunged into pitch-black darkness.
The sound of gunfire intensified in the pitch black, punctuated by the flashes of muzzle fire. Mia’s heart hammered in her chest as she watched the electronic feed flicker and die.
Suddenly, the heavy door of the control trailer above was kicked open with a loud crunch, followed by the sound of scuffling feet and a heavy thud.
“Gabriel!” Mia cried out, unbuckling her seatbelt.
Ignoring the pain in her ribs, she grabbed a heavy steel flashlight from the SUV’s glove compartment and stepped out into the damp, freezing air of the dock bay. She crept up the metal stairs of the trailer, keeping low to the ground, her boots making no sound against the steel mesh grating.
She peered into the darkened trailer.
By the dim light of a burning circuit panel, she saw Gabriel fighting two masked men in tactical gear. Despite being outnumbered, Gabriel moved with terrifying grace and brutal efficiency, disarming the first attacker and driving him into the console before slamming the second against the wall.
But a third man stepped out from the shadows behind Gabriel, raising a silenced pistol directly at Gabriel’s back.

“Gabriel!” Mia screamed.
Without thinking, she lunged into the room, driving the heavy steel flashlight with all her strength into the side of the gunman’s head!
