Chapter 9 - Shadows and Sunlight

Spring arrived in southern Wisconsin, painting the rolling green hills and oak forests in brilliant shades of gold and emerald.
The Romano family estate near Lake Geneva was a sprawling stone house surrounded by high timber fences and discreet, state-of-the-art security installations.
On the wide wooden porch overlooking the lake, Clara sat in a rocking chair, watching six-month-old Leo crawl across a colorful play mat, giggling as he chased a soft plush ball.
Gabriel stood near the edge of the porch, wearing a simple white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up, holding a glass of iced tea. He watched the boy with a quiet, peaceful expression that had completely replaced the harsh, cynical lines that used to define his face.
The screen door slid open, and Mia stepped out onto the porch, wearing a sundress and leather sandals. Her hair was down, blowing softly in the lakeside breeze.
Gabriel turned immediately, dropping his glass onto a small table and stepping over to wrap his arm around her waist, pulling her comfortably against his side.
“How was the call with the Mayo Clinic?” Gabriel asked, kissing the crown of her head.
“Doctor said my mother’s markers are completely clear,” Mia smiled, looking up at him, her eyes bright with happiness. “She’s coming to stay here for two weeks next month.”
“Good,” Gabriel said softly. “The guest house is already prepared for her.”
Marco stepped onto the porch stairs, holding a satellite phone. “Boss. News from the city. The state prosecutor’s office just finalized the asset forfeiture against Sterling’s remaining shell companies. The entire proceeds—nearly forty million dollars—have been transferred to the foundation’s medical trust.”
Gabriel nodded once. “Thank you, Marco. Take the afternoon off. Go fishing.”
Marco grinned, looking at Mia with deep respect. “Yes, sir. Good day, Miss Carver.”
As Marco walked down toward the docks, Mia rested her head against Gabriel’s chest, listening to the slow, steady rhythm of his heart.
“You burned down an empire for us, Gabriel,” Mia whispered softly, watching Leo roll over on his mat and laugh as Clara tickled his stomach.
“I burned down a cage, Mia,” Gabriel corrected softly, turning her in his arms so he could look down into her eyes. “You brought me back to life. You saved Daniel’s boy, you saved my soul, and you gave this family a future.”
He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small velvet box and opening it between them. Inside sat an exquisite ring featuring a flawless, brilliant-cut emerald surrounded by diamonds.
“You gave up your quiet life to stand beside a monster in the dark,” Gabriel said, his voice thick with raw emotion as he looked into her eyes. “Let me give you everything I am for the rest of my life. Marry me, Mia.”

Mia looked from the brilliant green stone up to the man who loved her with a fierce, absolute devotion. Tears of pure joy spilled over her lashes.
“Yes,” she whispered, her voice filled with absolute certainty. “Yes, Gabriel. Always.”
