Chapter 5 - Whispers of the Past

Upstairs, Mia stirred against the crisp white linens of the bed. The room was softly lit, the aggressive sounds of the party entirely replaced by the soothing hum of an air purifier and the rhythmic beep of monitors.
Victoria sat quietly in a chair beside the bed, holding a warm cup of tea. As Mia’s eyes fluttered open, tears welled up in the younger woman's eyes.
"Vic...?" Mia whispered, her voice raspy. "I thought... I thought she was going to kill us."
"Never," Victoria said softly, standing up to gently brush a lock of hair from Mia's forehead. "I swore the day I left this house that I would build an empire strong enough to crush anyone who ever laid a hand on you. I was just a little too late getting through those gates today, and for that, I am sorry."

"She hated that I came back to find out about our mother," Mia wept softly, gripping Victoria’s hand. "She said mother didn't leave us... she said Eleanor drove her away."
Victoria’s jaw tightened. "We will find out the truth about mother, too. Every single secret Eleanor buried is coming to light today."
