Chapter 8 - The Message in the Nursery
By ten o'clock that morning, a light drizzle began to patter against the windows of the second-floor nursery.
Ethan sat beside baby Leo's crib, watching the small boy sleep peacefully with his thumb tucked securely into his mouth.
Thomas stood near the doorway, holding an encrypted digital tablet containing recent security access logs.
THOMAS: "We ran a scan on the keypad mechanism from the vault below, boss. The lock was accessed three times in the last forty-eight hours."
Ethan turned his head slowly, his brow furrowing in sharp concentration.
ETHAN: "Who accessed it?"
THOMAS: "A keycard registered to your late wife Sarah's estate account was swiped at the outer security gate on Tuesday night at two in the morning."
Ethan stood up from his chair, his entire body turning rigid with quiet, dangerous tension.

ETHAN: "Sarah's estate keycard was destroyed during her probate proceedings four years ago, Thomas."
THOMAS: "Evidently not all copies were accounted for by the court, boss."
