Chapter 10 - Cleansing the HearthTwo weeks after the courtroom showdown, the autumn leaves blanketed the suburban streets in shades of amber and gold. Inside the Sterling estate, the heavy, oppressive atmosphere that had lingered like a toxic fog for months was completely gone, replaced by the warm, inviting scent of freshly baked pastries and the cheerful gurgle of baby Lily playing happily on her living room mat.

The legal fallout for Victoria had been swift and unforgiving. Stripped of her social standing among her peers and facing serious criminal investigations into her fraudulent financial filings and false affidavits, she had retreated entirely from public life, finally tasting the bitter fruit of her own lifelong deception.
Richard stood at the kitchen counter, carefully packing away some old decorative porcelain plates that his mother had left behind—the last remaining physical relics of her oppressive presence in the house. As he lifted the final box, Elena walked into the kitchen, holding a laughing Lily on her hip. She wore a comfortable knitted sweater, her face glowing with a natural, unburdened happiness that Richard hadn't seen in years.
"Are you sure you want to donate all of those?" Elena asked gently, resting her hand on Richard’s arm.
Richard smiled, wrapping his arm around both Elena and Lily, pulling them close in a warm, protective embrace. "I don't ever want anything in this house that reminds us of the past shadows, Elena. This home belongs to us now—not to old grudges or bitter lies."
Elena leaned her head against his shoulder, closing her eyes as she inhaled the familiar, comforting scent of his cologne. "It feels like we can finally breathe," she whispered softly.
May you like
"We can," Richard agreed, pressing a tender kiss to the top of Lily’s soft head and another to Elena’s forehead. "From now on, our family writes its own story. No interference, no secrets, just us."
The front door stood slightly ajar, letting in a crisp, clean breeze that rustled the sheer white curtains in the living room. Outside, the world was moving forward, bright and full of infinite promise, completely washed clean of the storms that had tried to tear them apart.
