Chapter 3 - Secrets Beneath the SurfaceMidnight draped the Sterling estate in a heavy, brooding silence. Upstairs in the nursery, little Lily finally drifted into a deep, peaceful sleep, her tiny chest rising and falling rhythmically beneath a pink blanket. Downstairs in the expansive modern kitchen, Richard sat at the marble island, staring blankly into a glass of amber whiskey.

The front door had slammed shut hours ago when Victoria finally departed with two suitcases and a parting curse, but the emotional debris of her exit lingered heavily in the air. Footsteps echoed softly against the hardwood, and Elena entered the kitchen. She had changed out of her maid uniform into a simple gray sweater and jeans, her dark hair tied back in a loose ponytail.
"Is she sleeping?" Richard asked softly, not lifting his head as he swirled the liquor in his glass.
"Like an angel," Elena replied, walking over to pour herself a cup of warm chamomile tea. She leaned against the counter opposite him, her expression a mix of lingering shock and deep concern. "Mr. Sterling... Richard, we need to talk about what happened today. It wasn't just an accident or a moment of temporary anger. Your mother has been... acting very strangely over the past few weeks."
Richard finally looked up, his red-rimmed eyes meeting Elena’s steady gaze. He trusted Elena implicitly; she had been with the family for years, acting not just as household staff, but as a loyal, protective anchor during the darkest periods of his life.
"What do you mean?" Richard asked, his voice tight.
"She’s been going through old documents in the study," Elena confessed, lowering her voice despite the empty house. "She found something regarding your late father’s estate and your wife's family history. She kept muttering about 'restitution' and how 'the bloodline must pay.'"
Richard frowned, a cold knot forming in his stomach. "My wife’s family? Elena, my wife passed away shortly after childbirth. Her family were ordinary people from out of state. What could my mother possibly have against them?"
"I don't know all the details, sir," Elena admitted, taking a cautious sip of her tea. "But I overheard her on the phone with an attorney last week, talking about filing emergency guardianship claims and proving that your household is 'unstable.' She wasn't just trying to hurt the baby today, Richard. She was trying to create an incident that would allow her to strip you of custody entirely."

The revelation hit Richard like a physical blow. He set his glass down so hard the liquid sloshed over the rim. His mother wasn't just acting out of spite; she was executing a calculated, long-term conspiracy designed to dismantle his family piece by piece.
Before Richard could process the full implications of Elena’s warning, a sharp, authoritative knock echoed loudly against the front door, shattering the quiet night and signaling that the storm was far from over.
