Chapter 10 - THE TRAP THEY BUILT OUT OF HIS TEMPER

The forensic accountants found the missing connection on Monday.
Harlow Protective Services had routed money through a consulting company controlled by Marcus.
The money had covered losses from investments Marcus had made without Vittorio’s approval and obligations he had taken on while expanding the family’s security contracts.
If Vittorio sold that division, outside due diligence would expose everything.
Marcus needed the sale stopped.
He also needed Vittorio afraid to remove him.
Bianca needed something different.
Rachel reconstructed it from financial records, household messages voluntarily turned over during the investigation, and Emma’s photographs.
Bianca had quietly borrowed against personal assets and had almost nothing left despite the appearance of wealth. Her lifestyle depended increasingly on Marcus.
Marriage to Vittorio offered security.
But Vittorio had recently told Bianca he wanted a smaller house, fewer guards, less involvement in family operations, and more time raising Lucy.
Bianca saw the life she expected disappearing.
Marcus saw prison-sized financial trouble approaching.
Lucy saw Marcus with Elena’s notebook.
So they solved three problems at once.
First, convince Vittorio that Lucy was becoming emotionally unstable.
Second, frighten Lucy into silence about Marcus.
Third, create an incident that would make Vittorio’s violence useful against him.
The breakfast scene had been arranged for the exact end of his council meeting.
Marcus disabled one camera because he did not want the abuse documented.
He positioned Daniel nearby because he did want a witness to Vittorio’s reaction.
He left the adjoining door open.
Bianca delivered her cruelest line when footsteps became audible.
And when Emma unexpectedly revealed her phone, Marcus lunged for it because she had captured the part that was never supposed to exist.
The setup.
Vittorio sat across from Rachel after she finished.
Three weeks earlier, he would have demanded Marcus be brought to him.
Now he stared at his own reflection in the dark conference-room window.
“They knew I’d hit them.”
“Yes.”
“And I did.”
“Yes.”
Rachel did not soften it.
“You were predictable.”
That landed harder than anything Marcus had said.
Vittorio had built an identity around being feared.
Marcus had simply turned it into evidence.
Rachel placed two folders on the table.
“One option is settlement. You stop pushing the financial investigation. They soften their accusations. Everyone protects themselves.”
“And the other?”
“We disclose the full timeline, cooperate, and accept that prosecutors may still charge you for the assaults.”
Vittorio thought about Lucy’s drawing.
May you like
Him outside the house.
“Open the second folder.”
