Chapter 11 - THE DAMAGE HE OWNED
Theresa did not congratulate him.
When Vittorio told her he intended to cooperate fully, she stared at him across the kitchen island.
“You want credit for finally doing what normal people do?”
“No.”
“Good.”
She poured coffee.
Then her voice softened.
“Because Lucy is still afraid when you get angry.”
Vittorio looked toward the stairs.
Two nights earlier, he had raised his voice during a phone call with a vendor.
Lucy had disappeared into the laundry room.
Emma found her behind a basket of towels.
No one mentioned Bianca.
They did not need to.
The damage belonged to more than one person now.
At Romano Freight, the board placed Vittorio on temporary leave while the internal investigation continued.
He had expected anger.
He had not expected relief.
David Mercer admitted some managers had been frightened to challenge Marcus because they assumed Marcus spoke with Vittorio’s authority.
“You created that system,” David told him.
“I know.”
Marcus had stolen within it.
But Vittorio had designed a company where questioning powerful men felt dangerous.
Emma carried her own shame.
“I should’ve picked Lucy up the first time Bianca made her stand in the pantry.”
“You were scared.”
“So was Lucy.”
Vittorio had no answer.
The investigation produced truth quickly now.
Account numbers.
Vendor records.
Access logs.
Messages.
But accountability remained harder.
Marcus’s attorney argued that Vittorio had delegated broad authority.
Bianca claimed her discipline of Lucy had been harsh but not criminal and denied knowing the full financial scheme.
Both insisted the breakfast abuse had not been planned.
Without proof of intent, the trap remained partly inference.
Rachel explained the problem plainly.
“Knowing what happened isn’t the same as proving what each person knew.”
Then Marcus made an offer.
A formal settlement meeting.
He would discuss repayment.
Bianca would discuss ending her accusations.
In exchange, Vittorio would limit cooperation with investigators and keep certain company records private.
Theresa read the proposal.
“He still thinks you’ll protect the Romano name.”
Vittorio folded it closed.
For most of his life, Marcus would have been right.
