Chapter 14 - THE LAST OFFER

Bianca came to Rachel’s office the following morning.
Marcus arrived separately with his attorney.
Neither knew the other had been invited until they entered the conference room.
Marcus stopped walking.
“What is this?”
Rachel answered.
“Your last opportunity to correct the record before additional evidence is submitted.”
Marcus looked at Vittorio.
“You threatening me?”
“No.”
That seemed to bother him more.
Rachel summarized what investigators now had.
Daniel’s statement.
The second guard’s corroboration.
Camera access records.
Harlow transactions.
Emma’s photographs.
David’s emails.
Lucy’s consistent account.
Marcus listened without expression.
Bianca began crying before Rachel finished.
Not loudly.
She stared down at her hands.
Marcus turned toward her.
“Don’t.”
Bianca wiped beneath one eye.
“You said he’d scare her for ten minutes.”
“Bianca.”
“You said Vittorio would come through the door, lose his temper, and then we’d have something.”
Marcus stood.
His attorney caught his sleeve.
“Sit down.”
Bianca kept talking.
She admitted she had spent weeks exaggerating Lucy’s behavior so Vittorio would question the child’s stories.
She admitted knowing Marcus had searched Elena’s study.
She admitted the dog-bowl punishment was chosen because Marcus wanted Vittorio to see something he could not tolerate.
Marcus stared at his sister with disgust.
“You think he’s taking you back?”
Bianca finally looked at Vittorio.
For a second, he saw the answer on her face.
Some part of her had hoped confession could still rescue something.
It could not.
Vittorio spoke carefully.
“You will never be alone with Lucy again.”
Bianca closed her eyes.
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“And what? You hand all this to the cops and pretend you’re different?”
“No.”
Vittorio looked directly at him.
“I hand them the part where I hit you too.”
Marcus’s expression shifted.
Vittorio had removed the final bargain.
No silence to buy.
No reputation being protected.
No family arrangement left to preserve.
Rachel slid the evidence-release authorization across the table.
Vittorio signed it.
Marcus leaned forward.
“You do this, you can’t control where it goes.”
For the first time in his adult life, Vittorio found that reassuring.
“I know.”
Rachel picked up the file.

The door opened.
And the Romano family lost the ability to keep the truth inside the family.
