Chapter 12 - The Cellblock Whisper

The glass partition between them was scratched and smudged with greasy fingerprints, reflecting the stark, buzzing neon tubes overhead. Daniel Mercer sat on the hard metal stool of the maximum-security visiting booth, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles ached.

On the other side of the glass, the heavy steel door buzzed open.

Vanessa walked in, accompanied by two armed correctional officers. The orange jumpsuit hung loosely from her sunken shoulders. The polished, aristocratic woman who had once hosted lavish garden galas and worn four-thousand-dollar designer sundresses had vanished. Her dyed blonde hair was overgrown with coarse gray roots; her eyes were shadowed by dark, purple hollows.

Yet when she saw Daniel sitting there, a slow, venomous smirk curled the corner of her cracked lips.

She picked up the plastic telephone receiver. Daniel lifted his.

"You look exhausted, Daniel," she whispered, her voice crackling through the cheap speaker. "Are the suburban nights too quiet for you? Does the water still sound like screaming when you close your eyes?"

"Who gave you the vial, Vanessa?" Daniel’s voice was dead, flat, and lethal.

Vanessa’s smirk froze for half a fraction of a second. She tilted her head, her gaze narrowing like a viper assessing an unexpected threat. "I have no idea what you’re babbling about. I’m appealing my sentence, Daniel. The legal aid society found misconduct in the digital evidence retrieval—"

Daniel slammed his palm against the glass, making the reinforced pane shudder. Both guards shifted their hands toward their holstered tasers. Daniel didn't blink. He pressed Sarah’s silver locket against the glass, turning it so Vanessa could see the etched initials: *S.M.*

Vanessa drew back as if burned. The color drained completely from her sallow face.

"Where did you get that?" she breathed, her smirk disintegrating into genuine, visceral terror.

"Someone left it on my front porch this morning," Daniel said, leaning closer until his breath fogged the glass. "With a video from the night Sarah died. A man wearing a falcon crest ring. You were never the mastermind, were you? You were just the hired help. You were the bait brought in to marry me, push Sarah into a grave, and drown Lily when she started remembering things she shouldn't have seen."

Vanessa began to shake her head frantically, her eyes darting toward the two guards standing behind her, then toward the ceiling security camera.

"I can't talk to you," she whispered, her voice trembling violently. "Hang up the phone, Daniel. Hang it up right now and leave this state."

"Tell me who he is!" Daniel snarled into the receiver. "He’s coming after Lily! Her birthday is on Saturday!"

Vanessa clutched the receiver with two hands, pressing the plastic so hard against her ear that her knuckles turned stark white. Tears of raw panic welled in her bloodshot eyes.

"You don't understand who you're dealing with," she sobbed in a hushed, desperate flurry of words. "You thought my mother and I were the monsters? We were pawns, Daniel! The Mercer legacy wasn't built on software and real estate. Your father—your *real* father—signed a syndicate compact in nineteen-ninety-four! Sarah found the ledger. She hid the keys inside the foundation’s dummy shell companies! She was going to the federal prosecutor! That's why Vance gave her the potassium overdose!"

"Who is the man with the ring?" Daniel demanded, every muscle coiled to explode.

"The Falconer," Vanessa choked out, her gaze fixed on the ceiling camera’s red blinking light. "He was at the party, Daniel. The day I pushed her into the pool... he was standing on the terrace with a glass of champagne. He ordered me to do it. He wanted to see if you would save the child or protect your reputation with the investors. You ruined everything by jumping in!"

Before Daniel could scream another question, the visiting room door behind Vanessa was thrown open with violent force. A senior warden, flanked by three tactical officers in riot gear, marched inside.

"Visitation terminated!" the warden barked.

"No! Wait!" Daniel shouted against the glass.

Two guards grabbed Vanessa’s arms, ripping the telephone from her hands. As she was dragged backward toward the darkness of the isolation corridor, she screamed at the top of her lungs, her voice echoing through the glass:

*"Check Lily’s medical records from the day she almost drowned! Look at the toxicology! It was never just pool water, Daniel! HE ALREADY GAVE HER THE FIRST DOSE!"*

The steel door slammed shut. The latch banged into place with the finality of a coffin lid.
