Chapter 22 - The Fall Into the Roaring Dark

The structural failure was immediate and cataclysmic.

The bedrock underneath the southern wing fractured along fault lines pre-drilled by the syndicate's demolition team. A deafening roar swallowed the house whole as thousands of tons of timber, steel, and ancient stone gave way to the hungry Atlantic.

Daniel’s boots lost purchase on the splintering oak floor. He tucked Lily tight against his chest, curving his spine into an armored shell around her tiny frame.

"Hold on to me!" he bellowed into her ear. "Breathe, Lily! Close your eyes and HOLD ON!"

They hit the exterior air. For two agonizing seconds, gravity vanished. Daniel saw the storm-darkened sky spin above him, saw Sarah standing atop the remaining sliver of the cliff above, her silhouette illuminated by lightning, watching them descend into the abyss with a chilling, vacant stare. Beside her, Vance was dragging himself to his feet, weapon drawn, firing down into the rain.

Then came the impact.

The Atlantic did not feel like water. It felt like hitting a slab of reinforced concrete at highway speeds.

The freezing salt water punched the breath straight out of Daniel’s lungs. The shock was instantaneous and paralyzing, thousands of needles piercing every square inch of his skin. The current seized them instantly, dragging them down into the pitch-black churning depths of the undertow.

*Not like this,* Daniel thought, his vision blurring gray as pressure built in his sinuses. *I pulled her from Vanessa’s pool. I pulled her from the high dive. I will NOT lose her to this ocean!*

His arms were locked around Lily like iron bands. Beneath the waves, the child was thrashing weakly, her tiny hands clawing at his tactical jacket. Daniel kicked violently against the swirling vortex, fighting the deadweight of his soaked boots and clothing.

Above them, debris cascaded into the surf: burning joists, shattered glass, and furniture hitting the water like incoming artillery. A jagged slab of cedar raked across Daniel’s shoulder, tearing through flesh, but he didn't dare let go. He forced his legs to churn, driving toward the faint, pale illumination filtering through the surface foam.

*Lunge. Kick. Push.*

With a desperate, choking gasp, Daniel broke the surface.

Rain lashed his eyes. Salt water burned his throat as he dragged Lily’s head into the freezing air. The girl coughed violently, vomiting seawater, her small chest convulsing as she inhaled the violent gale.

"Daddy!" she sobbed, choking on the brine. "Daddy, it's cold! I can't feel my legs!"

"I've got you, baby! I've got you!" Daniel treaded water furiously, his muscles burning with lactic acid.

Fifty yards to the north, a buoyant, orange survival skiff was bouncing violently on the swells. Through the sheets of rain, Daniel saw Dr. Kenneth Cole desperately hauling Rachel aboard over the rubber gunwale. Rachel had a crimson gash above her temple, but she was alive.

"Daniel! Over here!" Kenneth's voice barely cut through the howling surf. "Swim to the beacon! The cliff is still falling!"

Daniel kicked toward the raft, every stroke an agonizing battle against the rip tide. The cold was already setting in, stiffening his fingers into useless claws. He pushed Lily ahead of him onto a floating piece of wreckage, shielding her as another massive boulder dislodged from the cliff face, crashing into the water a mere twenty yards behind them, throwing a wall of white spray into the sky.

Kenneth leaned over the raft's edge, his powerful surgeon’s hands reaching down. "Give her to me! Daniel, give me Lily!"

Daniel hoisted his daughter upward with the very last ounce of strength in his deltoids. Kenneth locked onto Lily’s wrists and hauled her up onto the floor of the inflatable vessel. Rachel immediately wrapped the shivering child in an emergency foil blanket, pressing her against her own trembling body.

"Now you, Mercer! Take my hand!" Kenneth shouted, leaning back out.

Daniel lunged forward, his fingers brushing Kenneth's palm—

A high-velocity round cracked through the air.

Kenneth flinched as the bullet punched through the rubber pontoon just inches from his ear, hissing furiously as high-pressure air began venting into the storm.

Up on the surviving precipice of the cliff, standing near the smoldering ruins of the foundation, Sarah stood with a high-caliber sniper rifle braced against her shoulder. Even through the torrential rain, her gaze was fixed squarely on the skiff.

"Move!" Daniel coughed, splashing backward. "Kenneth, hit the engine! She’s going to sink the raft!"

"I am not leaving you!" Kenneth roared back, his eyes wild.

"You swore an oath to protect her!" Daniel shouted, his voice tearing raw against the wind. "Get Lily to Zurich! The brass key is in my waterproof pouch inside her jacket! GO! I’ll draw them off!"

Rachel met Daniel's eyes across the crest of a rising wave. There was no time for tears. No time for goodbyes. The syndicate's secondary tactical team was already visible along the coastline, boarding two high-speed interceptor craft at a private dock less than half a mile away.

Kenneth pulled the pull-cord on the outboard motor. The twin-blade engine sputtered, coughed, and screamed to life. The skiff pivoted on the swell, accelerating eastward into the fog and the raging Atlantic swells, carrying Daniel's entire universe away from the slaughter.

Daniel turned his back on them.

He didn't try to climb the rocks. Instead, he grabbed an unexploded marine flare floating among the wreckage, struck the ignition cap against the striker, and held the brilliant, blinding crimson flame high above the churning waves.

"SARAH!" Daniel bellowed into the howling tempest, his voice carrying the pure, unadulterated venom of a damned soul. "I'M STILL HERE!"

May you like

Above on the cliff, the muzzle flashed again. The bullet grazed Daniel’s ribs, spinning him in the water. But as he dove deep beneath the surface, clutching the burning magnesium torch, the roar of the interceptor boats redirected their engines toward him—away from the child who held the key to destroying their empire.
