Chapter 30 - The Red Chamber Beneath the Alps

Arthur Vance did not draw a pistol.
From his pocket, he pulled a small, heavy titanium cylinder with a flashing yellow LED ring—the manual self-destruct failsafe designed to incinerate the subterranean facility should the sovereign accounts ever face external compromise.
"You think you won, Mercer?" Vance whispered, his face twisted into a grotesque sneer of aristocratic madness. "If the syndicate cannot possess the capital, then the capital—and everyone who knows of its existence—will be erased from the face of the Earth."
"Vance, don't!" Sarah shrieked, lunging toward him. "The backdoor! My share is still routed through the secondary nodes!"
Vance shoved Sarah violently backward. Her head struck the corner of a server chassis with a sickening crack, and she crumpled to the floor, blood pooling into the diamond-tread steel grating beneath her blonde hair.
"You were always a disposable contractor, Sarah," Vance spat, his thumb hovering directly over the ignition trigger of the thermal charge. "And your husband was nothing more than an inconvenient bystander."
Daniel didn't hesitate. He pulled the trigger of the assault rifle.
The 5.56mm rounds tore through Vance’s chest, throwing the Director backward against the primary console. Sparks erupted from the shattered displays, spraying molten glass and wiring across the deck.
Vance fell, his eyes rolling back into his head, his hand opening as the titanium cylinder dropped from his fingers, clattering across the grating.
Daniel lunged forward, sliding across the wet floor, his fingers desperately stretching out to catch the cylinder before it struck the bottom of the drainage pit—
A gunshot cracked through the steam.
The bullet struck Daniel’s outstretched hand, severing two fingers in an explosion of red mist.
Daniel roared in agony, tumbling onto his side, his body slamming into the base of the terminal.
Standing ten feet away, clutching her bleeding temple, her face pale as a corpse, was Sarah Linwood. In her trembling hand, she held Vance's backup pistol.
"Nobody takes my money, Daniel," Sarah whispered, her voice a cracked, venomous hiss. "Nobody. Not Vance. Not you. And not that little parasite you call your daughter."
Sarah didn't pick up the self-destruct cylinder. She lunged for the central console, her bloody fingers flying across the remaining functioning keyboard, trying to force a brute-force manual transfer of the offshore accounts into her personal dummy corporations.
On the main display screen, the system flashed an ominous, pulsing red warning:
*CRITICAL FAILURE: PRIMARY COOLING SYSTEM COMPROMISED.*
*CORE REACTOR PURGE INITIATED: 60 SECONDS TO STRUCTURAL DETONATION.*
The entire mountain cavern began to shake violently. Heavy concrete dust rained down from the ceiling as emergency klaxons began their high-pitched, deafening death wail.
Through the shattered bay window overlooking the subterranean lake basin, Daniel saw the massive hydraulic drainage gates slowly swinging shut, sealing the escape channel under hundreds of tons of pressurized water.
"Daniel!" Rachel’s frantic voice screamed through his earpiece, broken by heavy static. *"Daniel, get out of there! The whole fortress is collapsing! The foundation charges are firing! DANIEL!"*
Daniel looked at his mangled hand. He looked at Sarah, who was laughing hysterically as she watched meaningless lines of corrupted code scroll across the dying monitors, completely consumed by her greed.
Then Daniel heard it.
Not through his radio.
Not through the sirens.
Through the subterranean audio monitoring speakers connected to the surface extraction vessel half a mile away on the lake.
*"Daddy...?"* Lily’s voice came through the open channel, thin, terrified, echoing across the dying control room. *"Daddy, where are you? The water is coming back... Daddy, please!"*
Daniel Mercer dragged his battered, bleeding body up from the floor. He didn't look at Sarah. He didn't look at the billions of dollars flashing on the dying screens.
He lunged toward the closing hydraulic drainage gate.

Just as his boots cleared the edge of the catwalk, Sarah turned, raising her weapon with a feral scream, aiming directly at his back.
A blinding flash of concussive light swallowed the chamber whole as the primary reactor core detonated behind them—and the freezing waters of Lake Geneva breached the reinforced glass, crashing into the fiery abyss with the roar of a thousand oceans.
