Chapter 14 - Ambush at the Aquatic Complex

The Mercedes SUV tore through the flooded streets like a battering ram, tires screaming as Daniel took the corner onto Olympic Parkway on two wheels. The storm had knocked out half the traffic signals across the district, turning the intersections into flashing amber graveyards of rain and fog.

Daniel didn't brake. He slammed his foot flat against the accelerator, the twin-turbo engine roaring like a wounded predator.

On the passenger seat lay his father’s old service weapon—a heavy .45 automatic, loaded with hollow-point rounds he had sworn he would never touch again after Sarah’s funeral. That vow was dead. The civilization he had tried so hard to rebuild around his daughter was burning to the ground, and Daniel Mercer was ready to burn with it.

He slammed through the chain-link perimeter gate of the county aquatic center, metal shrieking and sparks flying as the SUV skidded to a halt directly outside the shattered glass entrance doors.

The building was pitch-black. Emergency red backup beacons rotated lazily along the high concrete ceiling, casting long, bloody streaks across the interior Olympic pool.

Daniel kicked his door open and stepped out into the howling storm, raising the weapon with both hands. He crossed the shattered glass threshold in absolute silence, his combat training from his years in maritime private security reawakening with vicious clarity.

The air inside smelled of harsh chemical chlorine, spent gunpowder, and fresh copper.

Near the concession stand, Rachel lay crumpled on her side in a widening pool of dark blood. Daniel sprinted to her, dropping to one knee to press his fingers against her carotid artery.

Weak, fluttering pulse. The bullet had caught her in the shoulder, missing her heart by two inches.

"R-Rachel," he whispered, pressing a clean gym towel against the wound.

Her eyes fluttered open, glassy with shock. She grabbed his sleeve with blood-slicked fingers. "Upstairs... the observation mezzanine... they injected her, Daniel... a woman in a lab coat... they forced a syringe into her arm..."

The activator.

The clock was running.

Daniel stood up, his jaw clenched until teeth threatened to splinter. He didn't check the corners. He didn't take cover. He moved through the shadows along the pool deck like an executioner, following the wet, dragging footprints that led up the steel staircase toward the twenty-meter diving platform.

High above the dark, twenty-foot-deep diving well, Lily was suspended over the abyss.

She was tied to a wooden training chair, her mouth covered with heavy silver duct tape, her slender legs bound at the ankles. Her chest was heaving in wild, suffocating spasms as the poison began to circulate through her veins.

Standing behind her, holding an umbrella indoors with sickening elegance, was a man in an immaculate charcoal cashmere coat. On his right hand, reflecting the spinning red emergency light, gleamed the heavy silver signet ring of a falcon tearing into a serpent.

Two heavily armed mercenaries in tactical gear flanked the chair, their submachine guns aimed directly at the bottom of the staircase.

"Step into the light, Daniel," the man called out, his voice smooth and conversational, echoing through the cavernous stadium. "Put the gun on the ceramic tile. If that slide clicks, Lily drops twenty meters. In her current neurological state, the surface tension will shatter her spine before she even drowns."

Daniel stepped onto the edge of the pool deck, sixty feet below the platform. The cold red light painted the water between them like a lake of fresh blood.

He didn't drop the weapon.

"Who are you?" Daniel demanded, his voice carrying with an authority that made the two mercenaries tense their grips.

The man lowered the umbrella slightly, revealing aristocratic features, cold gray eyes, and silver hair cut with razor precision.

"I am Arthur Pendelton," the man said with a faint, polite bow. "Your father’s oldest business partner. And the true executor of the Mercer syndicate."
