Chapter 2 - The Poisoned CupDavid stared back and forth between the weeping child in his arms and the furious woman standing near the pantry. The air in the kitchen felt suffocatingly heavy.

"Elena, what is going on here?" David demanded, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low register as he set Lily gently down, shielding her behind him. "Why is Sarah unconscious on the floor? And what did Lily mean about the milk?"
Elena scoffed, crossing her arms defensively, though a flicker of panic danced in her eyes. "Are you seriously believing a hysterical kid and your ex-wife over me? Sarah has always been dramatic. She probably fainted for attention, or slipped on her own clumsiness!"
"Mommy didn't slip!" Lily yelled through her tears, stepping out from behind David. "I saw her! Aunt Elena forced her to drink the milk, and then she fell down and wouldn't wake up! And look at her arm—she's bleeding!"
David's gaze dropped back to Sarah's arm. A dark crimson stain soaked through the white sleeve, next to a shattered glass and an orange prescription bottle containing strange, unlabeled pills.

"Elena," David growled, standing up to his full height. "Explain the pills. Explain the blood."
Elena stepped back, her expression turning ice-cold as she realized her facade was cracking. "You're choosing them over me? After everything we planned? If you cross me, David, you'll regret it."
