Chapter 4 - The Hospital VigilThe sterile scent of the hospital antiseptic hung heavy in the air. Hours felt like days as David paced back and forth outside the intensive care unit, while little Lily slept soundly on a chair, her small head resting in Mrs. Gable’s lap.

The heavy doors swung open, and the attending doctor stepped out, peeling off his surgical mask.

David rushed forward, his heart in his throat. "Doctor? How is she?"

The doctor offered a reassuring, tired smile. "You're lucky, Mr. Vance. The sedative dose was dangerously high, but because she was rushed here quickly, we managed to pump her stomach in time. The head wound was superficial, requiring a few stitches, but she is stable now. She's resting."

David closed his eyes, exhaling a breath he felt like he had been holding for an eternity. He sank against the hospital wall, a tear slipping down his cheek as the immense wave of relief washed over him. He had almost lost them—the woman he had foolishly pushed away, and the sweet daughter who had just saved her mother's life.

An hour later, David sat quietly beside Sarah's bedside. The room was bathed in the soft, pale light of dawn filtering through the window.

Sarah's eyelids fluttered, and she slowly opened her eyes, looking around in confusion before her gaze landed on David.

"David..." she whispered, her voice weak and raspy.

"I'm here, Sarah," David choked out, taking her hand and pressing it tightly against his cheek. "I'm right here. I am so, so sorry."
