Chapter 10

Bernadette had never intended Ethan to simply vanish.
She intended him to be found.
The plan was a staged parental-abduction crisis.
Investigators reconstructed it from the driver’s instructions, Bernadette’s legal files, fabricated messages, emergency-petition drafts, private-investigator reports, and communications with the relative waiting at the Wisconsin property.
After Adriano left the reception for a scheduled late council meeting downtown, Ethan would be taken quietly through the east service entrance.
His passport and overnight bag would go with him.
Daniel would arrive at nine expecting to collect his son.
Bernadette would tell him Ethan had already been released to someone acting on Daniel’s instructions.
Confusion would follow.
Then Bernadette planned to wait.
Not call police immediately.
Wait until after midnight.
By then, the SUV would be in Wisconsin.
The next morning Bernadette’s attorney would present the family court with a manufactured emergency.
Ethan missing.
Daniel supposedly threatening to take him out of state.
Documents suggesting Adriano had already been serving as a secondary guardian.
A wealthy maternal uncle with a stable home.
A grieving father portrayed as erratic.
Bernadette expected authorities eventually to “locate” Ethan at the Costa lake property after an anonymous tip.
But she planned to claim Daniel had arranged the transportation.
The driver had been told never to speak with Daniel.
The relative at the lake house had been told the father wanted privacy.
Each person had received a different fragment.
No single helper needed to understand the whole scheme.
Bernadette intended to transform the recovery into proof that Daniel could not be trusted.
Then the emergency guardianship petition would be filed in Adriano’s name.
Without Adriano’s knowledge.
That was the major twist.
Bernadette was not planning to permanently kidnap Ethan for herself.
She was planning to frame his father for taking him.
And use Adriano as the respectable legal alternative.
The earlier clues finally fit.
The overnight bag and passport existed because Ethan needed to look as though he had been prepared for interstate travel.
The false school records establishing Adriano as a temporary guardian were groundwork for the emergency petition.
The private investigator was not merely spying on Daniel.
He was collecting ordinary moments that could be stripped of context and turned into a neglect narrative.
The family-law attorney had been retained before any actual emergency because Bernadette needed the legal machinery ready.
Even the anonymous emails warning Daniel not to move Ethan had a second purpose.
They created hostility between him and Adriano.
If Daniel later accused the Costas of taking Ethan, the accusation would sound like the latest escalation in an existing custody feud.
And the recorder?
“When Adriano leaves tonight, the boy disappears.”
It was literal.
Adriano needed to be gone.
Not only so he could not stop it.
So he could later appear innocent enough to become Ethan’s emergency guardian.
Bernadette had built a scheme in which both men were supposed to behave predictably.
Daniel would panic and look unstable.
Adriano would become furious at Daniel and protect the family.
Then Bernadette could place Ethan inside the Costa household and call it safety.
She had misunderstood both men.
Because Sadie heard the recorder.
Because Adriano returned early.
Because Daniel came immediately.
And because when the truth began appearing, Adriano did the one thing Bernadette never planned for.
He supported Daniel instead of competing with him.
Rebecca finished the reconstruction.
Adriano sat silent.
Finally he said:
“She was going to make Ethan think his father left him.”
“Yes.”
“And make Daniel think someone took his son.”
“Yes.”
“And put my name on the petition.”
“Yes.”
Adriano looked at the paperwork.
“She wanted me to steal my sister’s child without knowing I was doing it.”
Rebecca nodded.
“That is one way to describe it.”
Adriano stood.
Then stopped himself.
He remembered Sadie on the rug.
Ethan asking whether someone would take him while he slept.
His own affidavit.
He sat back down.
“What happens now?”
Rebecca closed the file.
“For once?”
May you like
She looked directly at him.
“Not whatever the Costa family decides.”
