Chapter 15

One year after the reception, Adriano hosted Sadie’s seventh birthday.

Not at the estate.

At a rented lakeside pavilion forty minutes outside Chicago.

Sadie chose it because there was a playground.

That was the entire reason.

No capos.

No council meeting in another room.

No relatives invited because tradition demanded it.

Daniel came with Ethan.

Grant came without an earpiece because Adriano insisted security could remain outside the children’s area.

Rebecca brought a gift Sadie ignored in favor of bubble wands.

The afternoon was ordinary.

That was the achievement.

Ethan and Sadie spent an hour chasing each other near the water.

At one point Ethan disappeared behind the pavilion.

Daniel immediately stood.

So did Adriano.

Both men froze.

Then Ethan emerged carrying two ice creams.

He looked confused.

“What?”

Daniel sat again.

“Nothing.”

Ethan handed one ice cream to Sadie.

Adriano understood how long a single sentence could remain inside a family.

The boy disappears.

For Ethan, disappearing needed to become an ordinary thing again.

Walking behind a wall.

Going to the bathroom.

Running to get ice cream.

Then returning.

No panic.

No secret car.

No adults rewriting what happened.

After cake, the children wandered toward a small upright piano inside the pavilion.

Sadie had been taking lessons.

She played the beginning of a song badly.

Ethan applauded anyway.

Daniel stood beside Adriano.

“You know Bernadette wrote him.”

Adriano turned.

“Through her lawyer?”

“Yes.”

The no-contact order allowed correspondence to be delivered to Daniel for him to decide whether Ethan should receive it.

“What did you do?”

“Nothing yet.”

Adriano nodded.

Daniel looked at him.

“You’re not going to tell me what I should do?”

“No.”

“That might be the strangest thing you’ve ever said.”

Adriano smiled faintly.

Daniel continued.

“Ethan knows there’s a letter.”

“What does he want?”

“He says he doesn’t know.”

Adriano looked toward the boy.

“That’s allowed.”

Daniel nodded.

The legal cases were finished.

The false school records were corrected.

Bernadette no longer controlled family businesses or children.

The staged disappearance had never happened.

Daniel’s authority as Ethan’s father was no longer treated as negotiable.

Sadie had stopped waking from nightmares about the study.

The central betrayal was over.

Only one thing remained unanswered.

Someday Ethan might want to hear what Bernadette had to say.

Or he might decide that being related to someone did not require reopening a door they had destroyed.

Adriano would not decide for him.

Daniel would not force him.

The Costa family would not vote on it.

Across the pavilion, Ethan hit one piano key while Sadie protested that he was ruining her song.

He hit it again.

She laughed.

Adriano watched them.

For the first time, the future of the children did not feel like something the family needed to control.

It belonged to them.
