Chapter 8

Adriano made the decision at the courthouse two days later.
Rachel expected him to oppose Daniel’s temporary restrictions.
Rebecca expected him to negotiate.
The Costa family expected him to protect their access.
He did none of those things.
Adriano signed a sworn declaration supporting Daniel’s motion.
More than that, he asked the judge to include him in the restriction.
No unsupervised contact with Ethan.
No estate visits.
No school pickups.
No medical authority.
Nothing unless Daniel expressly approved it.
Rebecca looked at him after he signed.
“You understand what this does?”
“Yes.”
“If Daniel decides he doesn’t trust you, you may not see Ethan for months.”
“I know.”
“Sadie too.”
“That part hurts.”
“It should.”
Adriano stared at the affidavit.
He also authorized police and family-court investigators to receive the recorder, estate access logs, relevant security footage, the family-office emails concerning Ethan, and the stolen-document evidence.
Not the Costa family’s private internal version.
The actual records.
Bernadette’s allies were furious.
One cousin told him he was handing the family to outsiders.
Adriano replied:
“A nine-year-old almost got handed to people he didn’t choose.”
The temporary order was entered.
Bernadette could not contact Ethan.
Costa relatives needed Daniel’s consent.
Adriano voluntarily followed the same restriction.
After court, Daniel approached him.
“You didn’t have to agree to all of it.”
“Yes, I did.”
“No.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You could have fought for supervised contact.”
Adriano looked at him.
“Would that have made you feel safer?”
Daniel did not answer.
“That’s why.”
For the first time, Daniel’s anger softened.
Not forgiveness.
Recognition.
That night Adriano returned to an estate without Ethan.
Sadie sat at the piano bench that had replaced the broken one.
She pressed one key repeatedly.
“Dad?”
“Yes?”
“Are you in trouble?”
“Some.”
“Because you hit Aunt Bernadette?”
“That too.”
She looked surprised.
“You were saving me.”
“I was.”
“Then why trouble?”
Adriano sat beside her.
“Because protecting you doesn’t mean every thing I do while angry becomes right.”
Sadie absorbed that.
Then hit the same piano key again.
“Adults are complicated.”
He almost laughed.
“Yes.”
The decision had cost him family authority and temporary access to his nephew.
But it also broke something Bernadette had relied on.

She had assumed the Costas would close ranks.
Adriano had chosen the court instead.
