Daniel received the full reconstruction in Rachel’s office.
He read for twenty minutes without speaking.
When he finished, he pushed the folder away.
Then he walked into the hallway and threw up.
Adriano did not follow him.
He waited.
Daniel returned five minutes later.
His face was pale.
“She was going to hide him in another state.”
“Yes.”
“And tell people I did it.”
“Yes.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Your name is on the petition.”
“I know.”
“She thought you would take him.”
“Yes.”
“Would you have?”
Adriano understood the real question.
If Ethan had genuinely disappeared overnight and forged evidence suggested Daniel fled with him, what would Adriano have believed?
He answered slowly.
“Before this?”
Daniel waited.
“I might have believed what the evidence looked like.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“Yes.”
Adriano forced himself not to soften it.
“I might have fought you for him.”
Daniel looked away.
There was the horror of the plan.
It did not require Adriano to be evil.
Only loyal, frightened, angry, and convinced he was protecting Nora’s son.
Bernadette knew exactly which instincts to use.
Adriano continued.
“That is why I supported your court order.”
Daniel nodded faintly.
The legal consequences began forming.
Bernadette faced investigation for attempted interference with parental custody, falsified documents, unauthorized access to Daniel’s home, misuse of personal records, and related conduct.
The exact charges would depend on prosecutors and jurisdiction.
Adriano did not demand a theatrical list.
The driver cooperated.
Bernadette’s assistant cooperated.
The relative at the Wisconsin property surrendered her communications.
She claimed she believed Ethan was coming for a temporary family retreat approved by both men.
The messages supported that she had been deceived too.
Bernadette had compartmentalized the plan carefully.
But not carefully enough.
Her family-office access was revoked permanently.
She was suspended from every legitimate Costa business and charitable role while independent directors reviewed her use of staff and money.
Several relatives objected.
Adriano gave them one answer.
“If you want her authority restored, explain that request to Daniel first.”
