Chapter 10 - The Woman in BlueNearly an hour passed.

Then the elevator doors opened.
A woman in blue surgical clothing stepped into the hallway.
She pushed a laundry cart.
Her head was lowered.
The officers barely noticed her.
David did.
He watched her walk.
Something about the movement was familiar.
He stepped forward.
"Stop."
The woman froze.
She slowly lifted her eyes.
David's stomach dropped.
His mother.
Her face was bruised from the crash.
Her clothes were hidden beneath stolen hospital scrubs.
She looked directly at him.
"David."
He couldn't breathe.
"How did you get in here?"
She smiled faintly.
"I came for my family."
"You're not family anymore."
Her smile disappeared.
Then she whispered:
"The girl is taking you away from me."
David stepped between her and the operating room.
"You're not getting through me."
She reached inside her clothing.
A flash of steel appeared.
The hallway erupted in shouting.
"Drop it!"
She lunged.
Not toward the officers.
Toward David.
Toward the operating room.
Toward the child she believed was destroying the life she thought belonged to her.
David caught her wrist.
They crashed into the laundry cart.
The weapon fell.

Officers tackled her to the floor.
For the first time, the woman who had controlled David's entire childhood was completely powerless.
