Chapter 19 - The DoorThat evening, after Maya fell asleep, David stood at the front door.

He checked the lock.

Once.

Then he stopped himself.

He almost checked it again.

Instead, he smiled.

He walked away.

For months, his mind had demanded certainty.

Every sound had been a warning.

Every shadow had been a threat.

But healing wasn't forgetting danger.

It was learning that danger was no longer in control.

Leah came up behind him.

"Everything okay?"

David nodded.

"Yeah."

She looked toward the door.

"You checked it?"

David smiled.

"Once."

Leah laughed.

"Progress."

They walked upstairs together.

Outside, the wind moved softly through the trees.

The house remained quiet.

Safe.

Warm.

Alive.

For the first time, David wasn't listening for the sound of someone coming to destroy his family.

He was listening to the sound of his daughter's breathing.

And that was enough.
