Chapter 21 - The Rising Black Tide

The first heavy-caliber round did not merely pierce the reinforced steel blast door; it vaporized the surrounding mortar, sending a blistering spray of tungsten fragments and pulverized granite across the concrete bunker. The sound was deafening, a percussive slap that shattered Clara’s flashlight and sent them both crashing into the icy silt covering the bunker floor.
"Get down! Behind the bulkhead, now!" Mark roared, his combat instincts instantly overriding the suffocating horror of Brenda’s bloody epitaph.
He lunged through the darkness, tackling Clara into the narrow alcove behind the cast-iron emergency generator just as a continuous, rhythmic barrage of .50-caliber fire tore through the intake grate. Tracers ignited the subterranean gloom with vicious streaks of crimson and emerald, chewing the heavy steel door into ragged, smoking ribbons. The concussive blasts slammed against Mark’s chest, rattling his teeth and threatening to rupture his eardrums, but his eyes never left the flooding intake shaft.
Beyond the shredded iron gate, the Hudson River had breached the outer valves. The red flares dropped by the tactical boats illuminated a churning wall of black, brackish water roaring through the five-foot culvert. The Architect had not merely sent an execution squad; he had rigged the river sluice gates to drown them in a concrete tomb.
"Mark! The water!" Clara screamed over the roar of gunfire and surging rapids. The freezing tide was already swirling around their knees, slick with engine oil and Brenda’s diluted blood. "The blast door is buckling! We’re going to be trapped!"
"We’re not staying to fight the river," Mark shouted back, racking the slide of his customized SIG Sauer P226, though he knew hollow points were useless against armored hulls. His gaze swept the trembling ceiling. High above the generator, half-hidden behind rusted conduit piping, was an auxiliary ventilation shaft—an antique escape hatch from the bunker’s original Cold War construction. "The chimney! Climb on the generator casing. Move!"
Clara hesitated only a fraction of a second before scrambling onto the slick metal housing of the generator. Mark provided a frantic boost, his shoulder muscles screaming as he launched her upward. Clara’s fingers clawed into the rusted rungs of the vertical access ladder inside the shaft.
Below them, the blast door finally collapsed with a catastrophic metallic groan. A torrent of thousands of gallons of freezing river water surged inward, carrying with it two tactical divers clad in matte-black drysuits, their submachine guns raised, mounted tactical lights cutting through the spray.
Mark didn't hesitate. Hanging from the ladder with one hand, he aimed down into the churning abyss and fired three controlled double-taps. The muzzle flashes illuminated the divers' horrified faces just before 9mm rounds shattered their visors. The divers were instantly swept backward into the churning vortex of the intake pipe.
Mark hauled himself into the narrow shaft just as the water level violently swallowed the generator, sparking a massive electrical explosion that plunged the drowned tomb below into pitch-black chaos. Climbing frantically upward through the suffocating dampness, Mark felt the freezing spray nipping at his boots. His lungs burned, but his mind burned hotter with the echo of the aristocratic voice on the satellite phone.
*She’s already aboard the vessel, Mark.*

He pushed Clara ahead toward the faint gray light of the surface. He wasn't running to survive; he was running to hunt.
