Chapter 23 - The Silent Cargo

Two hundred miles away, through the pitch-black swells of the Atlantic Ocean, the steel hull of *The Leviathan’s Wake* sliced through twenty-foot waves with predatory grace. Inside the lower promenade, insulated from the violent storm outside, the ship was a sanctuary of silent, clinical opulence.
In a stateroom adorned with soundproof white leather walls and Scandinavian teak, nine-year-old Lily sat on the edge of a massive king-sized bed. She wore an antique cream-colored silk dress that felt foreign against her skin. Her small hands were folded neatly in her lap, exactly as she had been instructed.
Her eyes were wide, glassy, and completely vacant.
Across the room, standing before a floor-to-ceiling panoramic reinforced glass window overlooking the raging ocean, stood an elderly man of towering stature. He wore a tailored bespoke wool suit, his silver hair combed back with immaculate precision. In his right hand, he swirled two fingers of single-malt scotch; in his left, he held an antique gold pocket watch that ticked with rhythmic, hypnotic persistence.
Sterling Montgomery turned slowly, his face etched with aristocratic lines of unyielding authority.
"Do you know who you are, my child?" Montgomery’s voice was velvet smooth, the exact voice that had chilled Mark through the satellite receiver.
Lily blinked once. Her lips moved mechanically, her voice stripped of the bright, laughing warmth Mark had cherished for three years. "I am Project Lyra. Subject Seven."
"And who is the man who called himself your father?" Montgomery asked gently, taking a slow step toward her.
A faint tremor rippled through Lily’s small frame. Her hands subtly gripped the silk of her dress. Deep within the recesses of her heavily sedated consciousness, a flash of memory fought through the chemical haze: Mark smiling under the golden canopy of Whispering Pines, fixing the chain on her bicycle, teaching her how to skip stones across the pond.
*“I’ve got you, baby girl. Nothing in this world can touch you while I’m here.”*
"He was..." Lily’s breath hitched. A solitary tear spilled over her lower eyelid, carving a glistening path down her pale cheek. "He was... Mark."
Montgomery’s expression hardened instantly into cold disgust. He raised his hand, snapping his fingers sharply.
From the shadows near the doorway, two female technicians dressed in sterile white scrubs stepped forward carrying a pneumatic hypo-injector.
"Disappointing," Montgomery murmured, turning his back on her to gaze out into the tempest. "Three years among the common filth, and his sentimental poison still clings to her synapsing pathways. Administer the neuro-blocker. Clear the slate. By the time we drop anchor in the Azores, she must remember only the bloodline."

Lily let out a tiny, stifled whimper as the cold pneumatic needle hissed against the base of her skull, plunging her back into the terrifying, soundless abyss of oblivion.
