Chapter 27 - The Marionette's Lullaby

Mark breached the upper promenade, eliminating three private contractors in a brutal, point-blank exchange of fire in the mahogany-lined stairwell. He moved like a force of nature, driven by pure, unadulterated fury. Empty shell casings clattered against the stairs; crimson splatters painted the gilded artwork hanging on the walls.
He kicked open the heavy double doors of the observation salon, his MP5 raised, sweeping the panoramic room.
The salon was bathed in the surreal, strobing illumination of lightning flashes from the storm outside. In the center of the vast chamber, secured into a high-backed leather medical chair, was Lily. Specialized biometric monitors flanked her, monitoring the faint, irregular rhythm of her heart.
Standing beside her was Montgomery, impeccably dressed, holding a small silver remote detonator in one hand and a gold-plated snub-nosed revolver in the other.
"Lily!" Mark yelled, lowering his weapon slightly as he stepped forward. "Lily, look at me! It's dad! I’m here!"
Lily’s head turned slowly toward the sound of his voice. But there was no recognition in those bright blue eyes. They were cold, empty, and dead.
Slowly, Lily raised her right hand. Clutched in her small fingers was a compact ceramic pistol, aimed directly at Mark’s chest.
"Subject Seven," Montgomery whispered softly, his hand resting on the girl's shoulder like a loving grandfather. "Identify the intruder."
Lily’s lips moved with chilling, robotic precision. "Hostile target. A thief who took me from the garden."
"Lily, no..." Mark’s voice cracked, the agony piercing deeper than any bullet ever could. He dropped his MP5 to the floor with a loud clatter, raising his empty hands. "Lily, baby, listen to my voice. Whispering Pines. The porch swing. Remember the wooden bird we carved together? You cut your thumb, and I put a dinosaur band-aid on it. You cried, and I told you that scars are just proof that we’re stronger than whatever tried to hurt us."
A sharp, violent spasm jerked Lily’s arm. Her finger trembled on the trigger. Behind the clouded veil of chemical conditioning, a violent war was raging inside her brain. The monitors behind her began to beep frantically as her pulse skyrocketed to 160 beats per minute.
"Silence her!" Montgomery commanded sharply, his composure cracking for the first time. "Execute the programming, child! Kill him!"
"Lily, I am your father," Mark stepped forward, ignoring the barrel pointed at his heart. "Not by blood. Not by an architect's blueprint. But because I would drown a thousand times in that black river just to see you smile once. Shoot me if you have to, baby girl. But I am never leaving you behind again."
Tears burst from Lily’s wide eyes. A guttural scream tore from the child's throat, shattering the hypnotic conditioning. Her hand dropped, the ceramic pistol clattering to the floor.
"Daddy!" she sobbed, throwing her arms outward.

Montgomery’s face twisted into unbridled rage. He raised his revolver, pointing it directly at Lily’s temple. "If I cannot have the cure, no one will!"
