Chapter 29 - Sinking the Leviathan

The exterior deck was pure pandemonium. The storm had reached a terrifying crescendo; winds howled at seventy miles per hour, tearing communication antennas and deck furniture from their moorings and hurling them into the churning sea.

The yacht’s stern was already sinking rapidly, the massive propellers lifting out of the water like the ribs of a dying whale. The remaining security mercenaries were frantically fighting over the single motorized lifeboat on the port side, screaming at one another before the davit snapped under the violent list, plunging the lifeboat and its occupants into the black abyss.

Mark fought his way toward the forward helipad on the bow, which was still angling upward toward the sky.

"Daddy, I’m scared!" Lily cried, the deafening roar of rushing water and groaning steel terrifying the young girl.

"Keep your eyes on me, Lily! Look at my face!" Mark shouted over the tempest. He pulled a spare emergency life vest from an open bulkhead locker, strapping it securely around her small torso, cinching the buckles tight. He took a heavy-duty nylon tactical tether, clipping one end to Lily’s vest and the other directly to his own combat harness. "We stay together. No matter what happens, we stay together. Do you understand me?"

Lily nodded frantically, her small hands locking onto the straps of his vest.

Suddenly, a loud crack echoed across the listing deck. The yacht’s primary radar mast snapped under the structural strain, collapsing downward directly toward them like a falling steel tower.

Mark threw himself sideways, shielding Lily with his own back. The heavy crossbeam grazed his shoulder, tearing through his flesh and smashing him hard against the raised coaming of the forward hatch. Agony flared through his collarbone, blinding his vision with white light, but his arms never loosened their iron grip around the little girl.

The bow suddenly pitched skyward at an impossible forty-five-degree angle. Below them, the sea roared as it swallowed the forward staterooms. The mega-yacht was taking its final plunge.

"Hold your breath, Lily!" Mark roared as the massive wall of dark ocean water surged up the deck toward them. "HOLD YOUR BREATH!"

The Atlantic Ocean closed over their heads with crushing, freezing violence.
